Hostel Alamo, like most reviews on tripadvisor and hostelworld seem to confirm, is a beautiful, friendly and well designed hostel. The receptionists are incredibly friendly and helpful (especially Max), the location is perfect (a 5 minute walk to plaza independencia), the dorm rooms are spacious and very clean (my room had a big balcony looking out over the backyard), the kitchen well equip, and there are a number of lovely communal areas including a tv room, dining area and backyard complete with bbq and small pool. I stayed for 4 nights and arranged a few wine tours through the hostel which was very hassle free and enjoyable. The vibe of the hostel is great as there are areas to relax, play guitar, dip your legs in the pool (it's not big enough for much else!) or watch a movie, as well as areas to drink wine and meet other people. While they don't offer free wine, asados or a massive pool like some other places, I don't think you could beat the price, location, vibe and design of this beautiful place. I was very happy with my decision and would definitely stay here on any return visits to Mendoza.
