“I love Damajuana”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 1, 2011

I stayed at Damajuana in February and again in April. It's a great hostel, social atmosphere, the staff is friendly, a restaurant on site, and a pool! The location is great, and you can book all your activities through them.

Overall it is not a bad hostel, but it can be much better.
- The main problem of the hostel is its staff. They do not really care about the customer and do not hesitate to show it you. It is even written at the Lonely Planet guide, and it is true...
- The big dorms are aweful with no windows. The smaller dorms with ensuite bath are very good, but overpriced (the most expensive hostel in Argentina and no breakfast included).
- The common area is very good - big living room with TV, swimming pool, BBQ area, 2 good computers, kitchen.
- The location is on the street full of the restaurants (including one very busy at the hostel) and bars, 10 blocks from the main square.

Room Tip: Book inline and the more expensive one

Just returned from Mendoza and 4 nights at the hostel. First thing to say its in a brilliant location in Mendoza right near good resturants, shops and Parque San Martin which you must go to. The hostel itself has lots of good points, pool, garden, good socialising room, table tennis. Internet is very poor and there is only one terminal. Staff are young and basically dont really care. The hostel is average noisiness and a good place to meet other travellers. Kitchen is badly kitted out. I stayed in a single room and the bathroom I had to use was poor. Overall this place is average but stay here if you want a great location and some fun.

I actually stayed earlier than my date, but never took the time to write a review. I was recently reading my old travel blog and realized that I should warn people about staying here. Stay somewhere safe, not here. My boyfriend and I attended one of the group dinners at the hostel and the woman from the front desk and her brother were super interested in how much our jeans cost in the states and our restaurants, etc. The next day, while we were out at lunch, a man came by to "stay" and (I was told) paid for a night but went into our room and cleared out our locked lockers of an ipod, laptop, camera, etc and left with all of it.

We spent the next day at the police station with the owner of the Damjuana. We never felt safe after that and highly doubt this man that paid for a night wasn't part of an inside job. He could have been, but either way, the lockers should provide security and they did not. They were easily broken into.

This place could be fantastic, but it has some huge issues it needs to work through first.

The staff are rude and unhelpful, they clearly make fun of you in Spanish to the other staff when they know you don´t speak it. I booked a small female dorm with an ensuite and when i arrived was put in a large mixed dorm with the most revolting shared bathroom i have ever encountered, no ventilation and a ceiling fan that did not work, i asked for my original booking only to be told it was unavailable and I would be moved tmrw. When I went to reception the next morning to be asked to be moved I was told the bed was availble from the previous night and I should never have been put in ¨hell¨. Luckily this room had a nice bathroom, huge lockers (converted wardrobes) and a little balcony, though the ceiling fan was so noisy it sounded like it would fall from the roof.

The pool and grass area are great, but a few days in and the back half of the hostel lost electricity and water, I am leaving and it has been out for two days. So no one can cook, all our food in the fridge spoiled and people have been left with no power and toilets and the staff really could not care less. They offer no apology, explanation or can say if and when it will be fixed. Thus I am leaving early.

There is little to no security for rooms as there is one key per room, so they stay unlocked all day and night. This is not reassuring for female travellors. They even let a walk in sleep on a mattress on our floor, even though the door had reached capacity and there was no locker for this person.

Extremely overpriced hostel, the dorms gave onto each other so an 8 bed dorm actually had the noise of a 16 bed. Bathrooms and toilets were poorly cleaned and we found a bedbug crawling on the pillow in the morning.
We moved after 1 night to another place in the centre of town with our own double room...all for the same price.

like the last review the staff was very friendly, but this hostel is certainly not worth the 70 pesos they charge (the most expensive hostel I have stayed at during 6 months in South America). Loud, loud, loud, loud all night long. I had a cold and decided to make it an early night, but was kept awake by constant partying and the clanging and bustle of the resteraunt next door. Also, the fan in the room had some serious rotational problems causing a jet engine whirring sound. The noise is only part of the several things that irked me during my experience at Damajuanas. I was given what they call a pull-out bed which is akin to sleeping on the floor and charged me more than people who had actual beds. They seem to have several different prices for their accomidations and there is no ryhme or reason to any of it. The pull-out bed required me to go to reception and to request that they get a mattress from the basement as the mattress and frame do not slide together under the other bed in the room. They then never brought me any bed linens, I could only choose from some dusty dog like blankets in the room to clad my bed with. Now to the next issue. I bought food to cook in their kitchen because I was trying to save a little money and to eat healthy. Well....about that. They had a bbq that evening and had comandeered the kitchen until about 1 am which left me hungry and without dinner. My last major gripe has to do with the random stragglers I found sleeping in the common area in the morning. About 10 people were sleeping on all of the couches throughout the room. I´m sure that maybe 1 or 2 of these people were paying guests and guess what? They had very similar sleeping accomodations to mine. Anyways, in conclusion, Damajuanas has a pool and not much else.
