“Good hotel”
Reviewed April 6, 2014

We stayed in Hostel Lao for a few days. As we're a couple, we got a private double with a bathroom. The room was very nice and tastily decorated, with a comfortable bed, a spacious bathroom and even a couch - this was hotel-grade and great value, definitely one of the nicest room we've seen in our five weeks trip. The doors were quite noisy, and our room being next to two bathrooms for the dorms, we didn't have the best sleep. Common areas were great.

Service was a bit up-and-down, one time we had great tips by very friendly staff, other time quite unclear directions in a not-so-friendly manner. One thing I would recommend to change is that Hostel Lao asks you to pay upfront for the Lujan de Cuyo bike rental (the alternative to Maipu). We went there and all the wineries we wanted to visit were all closed... That would have been fine, had we not already paid for the bike rental. The painful bit is that it seemed totally fine to just rent it out there without pre-paying. I'm sure Lao strives to provide the best experience in the things they recommend, and it would be great if they could change that.

The hotel is a bit far from center, on the east side of the center of Mendoza, when most of the action and restaurants are the west side - had to walk up to 30 minutes for some of the good restaurants (a walk you don't necessarily want to make after biking 30 kms)

All in all, we were quite happy with the hotel thanks to the wonderful room and some of the very nice staff. Just a few things to fix for Lao, but we still enjoyed it!

Dear Guest
We are glad you enjoyed your stay. We would like to answer a few of the issues you raised:
-We apologise that you did not find our reception as friendly and generally great as nealry all our guests do! We do our best to be friendly and provide good local recommendations.
-Once again, (actually this review and the last one are from the same couple!), doors are only as noisey as the people who use them!
-We do not ask you to pay upfront for the bikes. It was added to your bill which you can pay at any time during your stay. Had you have told us about the problems you had we would have spoken to the company and not charged you. Although we are suprised by the wineiries not being open on the day you went as everyone else who went on the same day came back with bottles under their arms.
-We are located in a nice part of downtown Mendoza just 2 blocks from the main commercial road and a 10 minute walk from the main square. In all large cities you can not expect to be on top of everything. If we were on the bar strip(which is actually not in the city centre) you would have to walk 30 minutes to the central square and the main road. I would also like to add that you must realy have gotten lost to do a 30km bike ride round the wineries. You usually dont cycle for more than 20 minutes on flat roads between 3/4 wineries!

Safe Travels

Excellent location between the bus station and main part of the city. Seemed like a pretty relaxed hostel from our four nights there. There's a very helpful information guide available at reception and the staff were great in arranging activities/providing useful information. We had a double room in the pool house, which was a bit small (the other room looked more spacious), but overall a very good value hostel - we would stay again!

Wow... we loved this place. our room was EXCELLENT!!! We heard so many great things about this place but the only room left was their superior private room. Blew the budget a little but worth every penny.

Pros: Great breakfast, great staff, super helpful. Lovely garden, gorgeous dog, massive room, great vibe, swimming pool. Amazingly good aircon, and much needed, trust me. Room cleaned daily. Quiet location, but obviously the flip side of this means you're a taxi ride from the town centre, where the bars and food are. Cheap taxis though and the hostel will call you one and make you reservations at a restaurant. Security is taken VERY seriously, much appreciated.

Cons:.... I'm going to say these are management suggests, rather than reasons to avoid, because we loved it, but.....
1) Please get some aircon in the common areas, so the doors can be shut... humid as hell and mozzy central.
2) Pool water really sticky, probably just needs a good service and water change. Wasn't cool enough
3) The bed in the superior room... oh, i hate to say it, because the room us heaven, but, it was hard as hell, as in, the mattress is too thin and you just dig into the hard base underneath. Would like a bit more of a luxury feeling bed in a room so expensive, compared to staying in a dorm of course. The sheets were very old and tired too.... if the bed had a little more love, this room would be outstanding.

Loved our stay, thank you!!

Em & J, England.

Room Tip: Splash out on the best room..... really really worth it!!

Hola! We are really pleased you enjoyed our home. Please be aware that the hostel, as I personally explained when I did you a map when you arrived, is in the downtown area of the city. Several places I recommended were in the outskirts of town so they are actually out of town, not the hostel!!

We do our best to reply to any suggestions so here we go...
1)if you come to a desert city in the middle of summer expect it to be hot and expect Mosquitos. Do not expect everyone to want to close themselves off in aircon to suit you! The idea of aircon in the common areas of the hostel really goes against everything we are/do.
2)"water sticky and hot"! Sorry but I am trying not to laugh! Should we put ice in the pool?! We can not realistically maintain the pool at a colder temperature and chlorinated water is a touch heavier or "a little sticky". The pool is cleaned everyday and is a normal little pool. Again in hot places things tend to be hot.
3)yes some of our sheets are not brand new, neither are they dirty, badly maintained or ugly! A good sheet can last a long time and has to give the fact that you are paying less than us$40 for a double room with a lot of services and breakfast. This is not expensive. You struggle to get a good breakfast for that where you live but expect a "luxury" hostel experience for less in Argentina?!
Finally with regard to the mattress I have just asked the current guests about the mattress and they have no problems. Having met the author of this comment I think this is a very unfair complaint. I know this is a personal problem due to health issues that means this view will not be shared by other guests. The mattress is 3 months old and it's a very good quality, thick mattress.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay and wish you all the best.

Istayed here for four nights in February and wish I would have stayed longer. The owners were helpful and friendly willing to share their advice on activities (Bacchus Bike Tours!) restaurants (Old Buld and Vines of Mendoza) and good wine (you have to try the Malbec "Sol y Suelo" that the hostel stocks). This hostel was one of the friendliest I have stayed at, it was great for going out in groups and putting activities together at a moment's notice. The rooms and bathrooms were clean and the life-saver was AC in the dorm rooms in the heat of the summer...the pool was great to. I would advise anybody to book here if you can get a room, you won't regret it.

Room Tip: dorm rooms have AC, private rooms off the pool don't.

In a lot of hostels you dont find a comfy couch to just sit and relax. You dont find nice staff and cute dog. Nice bbq, not a big hostel so its easy to get in touch. There is only one dorm witth 4 good beds and one dorm with 6 good beds. And aircon, needed in january. Only advise i would give the hostel is to make a toilet downstairs. But loved this place!

This hostel was like home from home for my friend and I. They accommodated us when we wanted to arrive a day earlier and again when we wanted to stay a day longer. The rooms where very clean as were the bed sheet. The air conditioning in the rooms we stayed in, was a welcomed too. The communal areas made it very easy to chill out and meet other people too. Mike was so helpful too and he recommended things to do on each day and on the day of leaving kindly said that the hostel was our home until we didn´t need it to be, which was extremely nice of him and summed up their friendly atmosphere. The pool was a relief from the blazing hot sunshine too. Thank you for a fantastic stay. Eirinn

This small hostel is very conveniently located few blocks away from the bus terminal and a similarly short walk to the city center.
Not many rooms, so you get to know all the patrons (who are for the most part from anglophone countries).
Spacious garden with a small swimming pool, hammocks and a BBQ. The atmosphere is very friendly and rooms are clean.
Breakfast is included, but not that good.
We had a double room at the back with a shared bathroom with another double, which was nice and quiet (the window overlooks the garden), but didn't have a closet nor A/C.
The hostel staff can organize activities for you, like biking excursions, whitewater rafting or horseback riding.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the garden are quiet but might get hot since they don't have a/c. Leaving t...

Hola! We are glad you enjoyed the atmosphere here in the hostel. We do our best to create a relaxed homely vibe. With regard to breaky; please remember we are still only a hostel, we do not charge enough to provide a 5* hotel breakfast. What we do provide is a simple, good breakfast of pastries, fruits, real coffee and tea, juice, jams&butter. And boiled eggs, fresh bread, fruit salad and cereals are rotated into the breaky throughout the week. I think most would agree this is a cut above most hostel breakfasts. We would also like to clarity that the pool house rooms do not have a wardrobe but a clothes rail instead, it seems more functional.
Safe Travels.
