“Fantastic ponies, people and polo.”
Reviewed June 6, 2012

Whether you are an absolute beginner or a seasoned pro you will benefit in so many ways from your time at El Retiro. Not only will you obviously learn how to play but there is so much more to the experience. Whether you are part of a large group, a just a couple of you or a solo traveller it really doesn´t matter. The Llambias family is enormous by English standards and so the house is always full of people. You just become another of the family! Also, at the weekends there are matches at the club so you´ll get to play and socialise with ´the locals´.

The average day starts with lessons and stick and ball in the morning and then baby chukkas in the afternoon. Marcos, who owns the club, teaches all the lessons and had a 4 handicap in his day.

If you are concerned about your Spanish then don´t be, the whole family is, at least, bilingual as are ´the locals´ so all lessons are in English or Spanish depending on what you need.

You are probably a horse lover so I should also mention the horses...

Whatever your ability to ride/play you are matched accordingly. As your polo improves and you become more confident your horses will change with you. They are all schooled brilliantly by the Argentine grooms and watching thier horsemanship and polo is a pleasure.

So what kit do you need? It´s all very relaxed about what you wear but Hats, boots and knee pads are a must. As a hugely repected member of the Argentine polo world, Marcos exactly where to take you for the best kit for the best price. You don´t find these addresses in a Buenos Aires guide book.

So what else can I tell you...? The food is awesome and never in short supply. Watch out for the Dulce de Leche pancakes, they are amazing.

If you fancy a trip away for a few days or a night out in BA then that´s all possible too, however, be warned... playing polo on a hangover is very, very hard...

El Retiro is a great place to; not only improve your polo but also experience Argentine hospitality, hear many a funny story from Marcos about his polo playing days all within a real family atmosphere.

Dear Fiona: Thank you very much for your kind words. We feel you already are part of the family, and would like to keep you here in Buenos Aires for as long as you can or want to stay. When you left on your trip to Jujuy, we felt we were not going to recover you. Luckily, not every love lasts for ever, so here you had appeared again, and we all hope you'll stay for long.
Our horses are resting now, but as soon as we start again with our polo activities, if you want, you'll become one more of our gaucho grooms.
See you soon and good luck,
Marcos

While planning a recent trip to Buenos Aires, we found Argentina Polo Day on Trip Advisor; based on the fabulous reviews, we decided to immediately sign up. I have to admit that initially I thought it was a bit pricey, but we thought, "how often do we get to say we played polo?"

We saved this special outing for the second to last day of our trip and I'm glad we did because it proved to be the highlight of our trip!

A small shuttle/van picked us up at our hotel in Buenos Aires and took us to the property where we were each greeted with a warm smile, a handshake, and a delicious glass of wine by the owner, Marcos. Marcos spent the entire day teaching us about polo, sharing his fascinating life story and making our visit extra special and memorable.

The flow of empanadas and wine was endless; we were thrilled!! Marcos explained polo to us while we observed a game (and continued eating empanadas and drinking wine). We then had a chance to practice a little "stick and ball" ourselves, which was great. I think its safe to say that none of us really even knew how to ride a horse, much less play polo.

We were then treated to an absolutely amazing "asado"!

I really can't say enough about the overall experience; it was worth every penny and I would do it all over again if I could.
