“What a awful place!”
Reviewed July 27, 2010

This hostel is the worst that I already had been. There are bedbugs, the kitchen is utterly dirty, there are many cockroaches ther. Some staff are really messy and joint with guests in parties and people can´t sleep for all the night long. While I was there one of the guest had his laptop robed by another one that even had showed documents to check in! When he went to the police, they hadn´t any information about the thief. The breakfast is poor and the sanitary conditions in general is disgusting.

My husband and I stayed at Tanguera Hostel for two nights. Oscar was a great host, gave us tips on where to visit, how to get around and places to avoid (for safety). The location is the best part of this place... it is located on a small side street in San Telmo, walking distance to the Microcentro (Plaza de Mayo) downtown district, Calle Florida shopping, Puerto Madero (high-end). DO NOT WALK from the hostel to La Boca - we were advised by Oscar and other locals that there are many muggings occuring in the area around La Boca's famous Caminito, so you shouldn't walk there (day or night). Two different guests at the hostel got mugged a couple days before we arrived after they did not heed Oscar's warning.

More about the hostel...we had a private room with a shared bathroom (plenty of hot water!). The foam mattress is very old,and was more like sleeping in a little cocoon, but the room was clean and secure. Sheets and towels are well worn but CLEAN! Margarita, one of the staff people, was extremely helpful... and even after leaving some personal items by accident in the room, she had them for me when I came back the next day to retrieve them. Breakfast is standard Argentine style - bread, jam, butter, dulce de leche, coffee/tea. But, there is a kitchen you can use for cooking meals. Enjoy your stay!

I really enjoyed staying at Hostel Tanguera. It's a small hostel - only about 20 beds and Oscar and Laura create a great environment. Breakfast is served in the mornings, the rooms are cleaned and the guests are not really party animals, which makes it a nice place to stay. It's a two story walk-up, but once you get there, you're glad you made the trip. It's a simple hostel, and I really enjoyed our time there.
