“Would stay here again”
Reviewed December 1, 2011

A small prepayment is required, but that assures you of a booked reservation. Good hostel, very good location. Friendly staff. Clean. Nice roof terras. Relatively quiet. The rooms are somewhat small, but that is almost always the case in Buenos Aires. Would stay again.

Room Tip: The double rooms are the better choice.

For it's price, this is good value in a great location. Near to the centre of San telmo, but not too near, if that makes sense, a few blocks away. Not far from the Subte station. Nearby things to eat and supermarkets. And near to some good bars. If you go, please try the fresh pasta from the guy a few doors down, it I amazing, made hot, which is useful since the hostel has only the sparsest kitchen facilities. Excellent cheap laundry right opposite the hostel.

Hostel itself is a lovely old colonial building. Our room was nice and clean although not large. Lots of outdoor terrace space for chilling in the fresh air, although without views of the city. Communal areas are plentiful with several free pcs, but unfortunately there is a guy who works there who plays some shoot-em-up online game at the reception desk four four hours each evening, so you've got to like the sound of machine guns at high volume.

Breakfast is not great, but pastry and coffee is fine. alex who works there is mega helpful and a really nice guy, and the place is much improved by his presence.

overall gets four out of five but only thanks to Alex!

Very creepy hostel. The staff wasn't helpful at all: rather we had the impression they were always making fun of guests and were not available for giving any kind of information (they barely said 'hello' when seeing you and when they do, it's like they are doing you a favour). They don't speak english.
The structure could give much more if it was only well taken care of. The room was small, the walls were dirty, the furniture was old and the bathroom in need of a refurbishment. There's a common area but it's dark and you can meet strange people hanging around there. The only good thing was the breakfast: good variety of food, good coffee and excellent medialunas.
The location was ok. You can probably find much better for the same price.
Don't get fooled by the pictures on their website: they were probably taken when they first opened the hostel!!

We were going to stay four nights at this hostel, but we ended up staying a lot longer as our flights were cancelled to Puerto Madryn. The hostel is clean and tidy, with some of the rooms with bathroom and some with shared bathroom, and a nice breakfast. As most of the posts already say, this is a lovely laidback hostel with really friendly staff and its in a good location in the bohemian San Telmo area. Its a short walk to the Microcentre and there are some great restaurants just down the road (go right out the hostel and turn first left and walk a block, you can´t miss the restaurants). They also booked us taxis to and from airports, and they all arrived / were secure and reliable.

The central space has a lovely glass roofed atrium which is really pretty, and there is a rooftop terrace too.

They were particularly brilliant when our flights were cancelled due to the ash cloud and, despite being very full, I booked directly with them over the telephone from the airport for a room. After a long day waiting for flights, we can only say how grateful we were for their assistance, understanding and kindness.

We would well recommend this place!

This was our first stop on an 8 month trip and was great. Clean, friendly, hot water, free internet, nice breakfast and safe. Also the staff are really helpful and welcoming. I would definitely recommend it. Our favourite part was the cool roof terrace. Stay here!

I stayed at Hostel Telmo Tango for 6 nights and have paid in advance for my return from Uruguay in 5 days. The hostel is cleaned every day and looks like the pictures on the website. It´s been very quiet except for 1 night when there were some poeple in the courtyard area and its a bit of an echo. Most rooms are in the terrace area which is decorated with planters of begonias. They all have single bunk beds and a small side table /cabinet that you can lock. Or some rooms have a larger cabinet/cupboard that can be locked. A few rooms have a double bed. 2 rooms have balocnies facing over the street- one of these has a 2nd floor loft and sleeps 4. Its an amazing room.

The mattresses from my experience of 2 rooms are thin and a bit lumpty and the sheets a bit worn. Its the one drawback to the hostel, in my opinion. Breakfast is basic. Coffee, hot milk. Cereal and croissants, pastries and juice. Bathrooms are in the terrace area and there are numerous private bathroom/showers. I never had to wait and they were always clean. The kitchen is a basic hot plate with pots, pans and kettles provided and there´s a fridge for guests to store food. The front desk clerks apeak English and if George is still at the hostel when you visit you are in for a treat as he´s a real character: friendly, helpful and welcoming. The hostel also helped arrange for a taxi service from the airport, tour to nearby Tigre as well as a horse ranch 1hr out of the city.

During my stay, I have met various travellers from a wide variety of ages.. from early 20´s to later 40´s and its not a party or rowdy atmosphere at all.

San Telmo is a great neighborhood. Laundromats, cafes, restaurants and grocery stores are all within a few blocks if not right across the street. The Saturday street market in the area is not to be missed. At least 2 bike rental shops are within walking distance. Like any city the size of Buenos Aires, keep your valuables close to your body and out of sight as much as possible. I´m a single woman travelling alone and I feel fine walking the area at night but I have a considerable dose of street smarts.

Contact me if I can be of further assistance.

My fiance and I stayed here once before and returned again this past May when we traveled to Buenos Aires for a wedding. I really enjoy the ambiance of the hostel - it's an old converted mansion and features a stained glass solarium in the central common room and lobby area. The rooms are accessed through outdoor passageways and there are plenty of colorful flowers and sunlight in the hostel. There's free internet and the building is very safe and secure. The neighborhood in San Telmo is a little gritty but I felt safe walking alone at night as a female. Taxis are plentiful but there are plenty are areas to walk to.
