“Tango Immersion”
Reviewed March 29, 2013

Once you walk in the tall wooden doors, you are immersed in Tango culture within a beautiful and architecturally interesting building. From the famous tango dancers and composers painted on the walls to the massive amount of wood staircases and open lighting, to the high ceiling rooms, this hotel transports you to another place. I was told the hotel was designed as, and used to be a bordello and this seems to fit. After all, the rooms are not oversized and there is not a lot of room to hang clothes or lay out the tango shoes, but when the objective is a bordello, who needs the extra space? For our experience, the room and facilities meet our needs. We had a quite room in the back, on the second floor. The tango workshop for which we came were all in the hotel which made it easy for us. The rooms for the workshops were all good and met needs. Those who worked there were helpful and friendly. It's located in a central area but one should take taxis in the evening to be safe.

Dear TrekkerPhotog,
Thanks for your time and review, that is just what we want our guest fell, a time travel to the past and an atmosphere of tango. This historical patrimony building, is kept as it was originally, that is why all our rooms are diferent on size, style and design. I am glad that you enjoy all our activities that we offer to our guest.

An old art deco style mansion hidden within the tango area of BA. In fact, our taxis would struggle to find it without the name of the road because it is not actually listed as a hotel but as a mansion, so make sure you remember the address! I went with 4 girlfriends to learn tango and this is also a tango school so there were lessons going on throughout the day. We did go in March which is the tango festival for Buenos Aires and teachers from all around the world congregate for dancing, shows and teaching. The interior of the building was absolutely charming and stylish but a little shabby chic. A couple of the bedrooms did not have windows so make sure you request a room with a view when you book if that is what you want! There is no dining room as such, but one of the ballrooms doubles up so you have to eat out for lunch and dinner. Just round the corner on the right, 3 minute walk is a super little steakhouse (I'm vegetarian so there were options). A small swimming/dipping pool is on the roof with a handful of old/broken sunbeds and chairs, not particularly inviting but somewhere to sit (if you're quick) when the sun comes out. I would definitely return to this hotel if I were to go back for more tango lessons but it is not somewhere I would stay for luxury and comfort.

Room Tip: Perfect for tango lessons and to get a real feel for the genuine Tan Telmo area but not a luxurious...

Dear Karen,
Thank so much for your review, that help us to improve ourself. I think you were here with us during the CITA festival, that´s a big festival with really good teachers from all aroudn Argentina. We already add more option to our menu, so for the festival we will have more dishes, so if you decide to come back you will be glad, but as you mention, there are plenty of option beside the hotel to eat outside. We are taking care of all that deatails you mention, we are working harder to make everything perfect for our guest.

This is an lovingly restaurated early 20th century mansion with loads of character, wooden floors and antique furniture. There are Tango murals everywhere and as soon as you cross the threshold you feel at home. I had a courtyard room (no window) and it was very peaceful. The only noise was when people stood outside your room to chat (hardly happend), And the air con was super quiet and efficent!
The hotle has a couple of "ball rooms" where they hold daily Tango lessons (35 Pesos/ hour) and in another one you have your breakfast.
If you are in the hotel in the evening you can moslty hear some Tango music playing (which I loved, but might not be to everyones taste). They have a milonga on Thursdays- there you can hear the music up to 2am...
The pool on the roof had water (was freezing, but refreshing), the jacuzzi not. There is as well a sun terrace to relax, sunbathe and read, and I was mostly on my own there which was great!

Hmmm, the breakfast wasn't great- yes, they do have ham, cheese, and eggs on request, but as I asked the chef asked me for my name/ romm number and said "no incluido" (not included). So it was medialunas, toast, jam and cornflakes for me only, and I felt pretty embarassed for asking.

The reception staff was very helpful indeed! If you needed advice regarding directions, laundry, supermarkets, room safe they were always friendly and went out of their way to help. They all spoke excellent English, and many thanks to Hugo who was very helpful indeed!
WiFi available throughout the hotel and was pretty fast.
It is located 4 blocks from Defensa (main street of San Telmo) and 2 blocks from the subte Independencia. There are plenty of supermarkets around the hotle and little retaurants in walking distance.
I felt safe as woman on my own during the night.
Would definelty stay here again!!

Dear Son_uk22,
Thanks for you let us know about your experience with us, that is really important to us. The hotel is like traveling on time, all our guest told that to us, the place is prepared for that. On the breackfast we find several problem, that is why we fix that with the buffet one, now everything is ready for the guest. If you want to be in touch with the tango or even try, we have here anything you need to, as you mention, milonga, musica and lessons. One more time, thanks for your wonderfull review.

Experience BA as it was before. This is a well maintained but old hotel, a little rough around the edges but I didn't expect it to be perfect. We choose the larger/luxury/suite option and we had to giggle when we saw the Jacuzzi - great for couples but I woudnt get naked in the tub in the same rooms as my mate who was watching TV just to the right of the tub views! :). The beds however were huge for single beds and sooo comfy and warm after coming in from the cold winter. Perception from the outside is its small, but its HUGE. Not for people with disabilities or problems walking stairs, there are lifts but not access all areas. Very old fashioned, sometimes quite dark, and don't expect anyone to use the 'gym' (cos they haven't for about 10yrs!). Don't expect too much from breakfast and especially not from the service, it reminded me of a carry on movie or Fawlty Towers but it was sufficient - I would recommend not paying for the breakfast and get your own from one of the local options outside. Overall it was a great experience, and amazing to stay I such a historic and beautifully painted hotel - check out the walls and have a wander around the public areas, up and down the stairs. You will hear the tango/classes well into the early nights but its not bad and I used ear plugs anyway. I wouldn't stay there again but Im glad I did, it was an experience not to be missed, to sleep in a tango hotel museum. Add it to your to-do list.

Room Tip: Choose the suite for space and bigger beds, open Jacuzzi option possibly only for couples or friends...

Dear Paula,
Thanks for your coment and recomedation. About the room yes it is true that the jacuzzy is in the room, most of the time this room is booked by couples. On that time the breackfast was an american breackfast, but we returned to the buffet one, sorry for that experience. We have group tango lesson and milongas at the hotel, but it doesn´t last until too late, that could be the sound you mention. The hotel was built on an historical building, that is why you have a main stair, but then you can take the elevator.
Thanks for everything.

An off-the-wall boutique hotel well located in San Telmo. Unprepossessing from the street, inside is a different world. High ceilings, marble, beautiful polished wooden staircases with matching balustrades and walls painted with bold depictions of the tango. Rooms large as are the bathrooms. Beds huge. The basement room in which the breakfast is served is considerably more interesting than the breakfast itself: it’s principle use is for tango classes and shows, so breakfast is taken at tiny café tables on the dance floor, the walls adorned with plaster relief depictions of street life in the early 20th century and, of course, the tango. But for the stunningly dull breakfast this hotel would have got 5*.

Dear Greynomad100,
Thank you very much for your reviewed about us, we already take care of the breackfast changing again to the buffet one. As you mention, the hotel inside have plenty of detail to keep the style of an original old building.

We spent a week at the Mansion Dandi Royal in January 2013 and cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. We have received such excellent and friendly service and advice during our stay and the accommodation has been of a high standard with an amazingly comfortable bed with quality bedding, beautifully appointed bathroom, almost silent air conditioning and the fastest and best wifi available in the rooms that we have ever experienced in our travels. Coffee, juice and croissants with an omelette or ham and cheese (if requested) and toast and jam were sufficient to keep us happy for breakfast. Hard to imagine enjoying San Telmo in any other than this historic and beautifully maintained hotel.

Room Tip: We had a back room which was spacious and overlooked the pato. Very comfortable and so, so quiet.
