“Forget sleeping, it's socialising on crack.”
Reviewed January 20, 2014

First and foremost if you want to meet people this place pretty much guarantees you will genuinely encounter plenty of other backpackers. This doesn't mean that they will be the ideal type of person you'd like to socialise with however.

Milhouse is a party hostel and as such it attracts the party type, (the fixed term holiday), the solo backpacker (the unlimited traveller) and all in between. It may be a good place to start as buenos Aires is many peoples starting point so you can meet people and travel onwards with them (apparently a very common instance). Dorms are clean, bathrooms are well maintained and the social areas are large and inviting - designed for maximised socialisation.

Milhouse spoon feeds it's guests everything the need to have a 'good time' in the Argentinian capital. There are plenty of day time actives on offer such as walking and bicycle tours at a pretty decent price (although they are also offered for free in the centre). But the main attractions are the night time events. Weekly events such as BBQs and live music shows plus every night there is a new club that the place encourages it's guests to go to (inc. entrance and transfer). There is always a pre-party at one of the hostels which start at 11 and go on until 2. Early nights are out of the question.

One of the biggest negatives is that it encourages a 'hangover' culture where so many people spend the day in the hostel suffering, recovering and ultimately living for the next night. If you are on a party holiday it is great but if you want to do things in BsAs then I'd look elsewhere or limit your time here.

Location is good, close to the Obelisco. Price is a little steep but you get what you pay for. Be warned, take plenty of vitamins with you. Every other person is ill in Milhouse from over abuse. Staff are friendly indeed.

Room Tip: No lifts. First floor dorms are great.

Good location. Otherwise, not my kind of hostel. Bedrooms good size and good lockers. Could do with new mattresses. Bathrooms not very clean and poor kitchen facilities so didn't really feel equipped to cook here.

Staff just about answered your questions (after leaving you standing there waiting a few minutes) and I didn't find them overly welcoming or friendly. Didn't do any of the organised tours but they seem to organise a lot which is great.

Not the friendliest atmosphere for solo travelers, better for groups, in my opinion. Hosts parties in tandem with other Milhouse hostel on Av. de Mayo.

Milhouse Hipo is a mix of a few things, some very good some "just ok". First of all, it is a party hostel, there's always people drinking and seeking for fun. It is not a place to just "go to sleep", neither is a cultural hostel.

With that on mind, I was impressed of the clean and organized place the hostel is. I didn't see a dirty bathroom neither sticky floors neither garbage in the places it doesn't belong.

The parties themselves are organized everyday between 10PM and 2AM -they switch places between Hipo and the other Milhouse, at Av. de Mayo-. After those parties, the hostel offers tickets to dance clubs.

The location is amazing, and probably the best part. Multiple subway stations and bus lines are close to the hostel.

The breakfast is very good (not excellent but very good), the food they serve at the bar is good in quality but limited to just sandwiches. Of course, the there are always drinks.

Now for the not so good part. The staff, although they will answer your questions and try to keep you happy in general, the attitude is not always the best. The doorman is very unpolite -I went back after my stage to check if some friend was there and he literally slammed the door in front of me-. The receptionists are good in some cases but barely polite in most cases.

Other thing. The elevator doesn't work all the time.

Room Tip: The elevator doesn't work all the time. If you can, choose a room at the first floor.

Ruined by a really bad attitude from staff/management and indifference. If you're coming to Milhouse expecting the quality of Loki hostels, you're going to be very disappointed.

Two guys were robbed at gunpoint near the docks immediately after checking out, passports, cameras - all gone. When they came back to the Milhouse without their passports, they were told they were not allowed to check back in at all. This all happened in a very rude, abrupt way... "No, sorry, nothing we can do, go somewhere else". They protested that they had already stayed for 4 days in Milhouse and had just checked out, but were still told no. Their main backpacks were still in the lockers. After much wrangling the other staff members I guess convinced the manager to allow it, but all us other guests were flabbergasted. Have some compassion for your guests who have just had a gun pointed at them and all their valuables stolen!

Milhouse is a party hostel, so people are probably going to get drunk at some point. One of the backpackers had clearly drank too much and was battling to walk. Sure, he was also being uncooperative when people tried to help him, but that's what happens in party hostels - people get drunk after they party. Milhouse Hipo kicked him out onto the street and slammed the door behind him. He was staying at the other Milhouse Avenue, but he could barely stand. They didn't try get him back safely, or call a cab or offer a bed in the Hipo hostel (which wasn't full) - nope, just throw him into the street like trash. When I asked the next morning what happened to him, they staff didn't know or care. As a party hostel that throws massive parties in the hostel and hands out free shots, they staff should take better care of their guests when the inevitable happens.

On the last night I was there, what seemed like hundreds of police officers stormed the place. I had a cop right outside my dorm room standing at attention menacingly. Everyone downstairs was told to go to their beds. When I tried to find out what happened from the staff - "Oh, there was an incident". Really? What? Not a very nice experience. No information provided to the rest of us.

The rooms aren't terrible but are just adequate. I was expecting airconditioning as that's what they advertise, but they put me in a room with just a fan. In order to not die of heatstroke it's necessary to open the door all night but the rooms overlook the incredibly noisy street, so you have to deal with screaming and honking all night coming from below.

They have an annoying rule that the last person to leave has to lock the dorm room and take the key to reception. Sounds great in theory except when you get up the 2nd floor only to find your room is locked and you don't have the key - the hundredth time you ask for a key it starts to get old.

The doorman was incredibly rude. Never a smile or a greeting, just glared at everyone the whole time as if it was a huge inconvenience for him to do his job. Some staff were nice, but most of them were not.

Room Tip: Away from the road!

Although placed in downtown area of Buenos Aires (near "de Mayo" Ave. and "Nueve de Julio" Ave.), Milhouse Hipo is good located because of the day and night life of the neighbourhood.
You can go by walking (or by subway or bus) to the most famous places in BA like, the Recoleta, La Boca (El Caminito , Boca Junior Soccer Stadium), Palermo, Porto Madero.

You always have a place to go by night, from Monday to Sunday and there is always a pre-party in one of the 2 hostels of the chain. The other one called Milhouse Avenue is placed 3 blocks away in De Mayo Ave. It is a 6-floor building, 2 x bigger than Hipo. Pre-parties usually ends by 2am when people go to the clubs (yes, nightlife starts a little bit late...). On the front desk of the 2 hostels, you can buy tickets to the clubs paying less and avoiding lines in front of the clubs.

The structure of the property is good. I shared a room together with 7 more people. The room was equipped with air conditioning system, 2 ceiling fans and 2 bathrooms (very good!). Bed is OK, but the mattress could be more stiff (I could not sleep well...).

Breakfast was "satisfactory"... It included hot water, coffee, bread and butter, milk, juice, watermelon and corn flakes. You can ask for an "American Breakfast" with eggs and many slices of bacon but is not included in the price of the room.

Staff are well prepared and can speak Spanish, English and Portuguese.

The only negative point of my experience was the lack of electricity for more than one hole day (almost 2 days!!!).... So, it was hard to sleep well in a 29ºC outside temperature and was impossible to recharge tablets and cellphones and connect to internet.

I would say that In my next visit to BA, I would return to this hostel.

Room Tip: In summertime choose rooms from the back wich sunlight does not heat the walls. In wintertime do the...

Milhouse was our first stop in South America (Buenos Aires). It has a great atmosphere, clean rooms, friendly service and wonderful amenities for backpackers. Once we finish travelling the south of Argentina and Chile we'll be heading back to Buenos and will definitely stay there again! Make sure to book in advance :)

Room Tip: There was a slight mix up with our booking... we thought we booked a room with a private bathroom bu...
