I guess it is clear to any reasonably intelligent person that a tango show in Buenos Aires would be somewhat "touristy", but what we experienced at Esquina Carlos Gardel was truly outrageous. We had been convinced that it was worth paying the extra money for a "VIP seat" upstairs and - given that it was a touristy venue - we were not expecting great things. However, we would at least have expected a dinner which is average for Argentinian standards. Unfortunately, the dinner was the worst food that we throughout our 3-week Argentina trip and the venue charged us as much as we paid for our best dinner experience in Buenos Aires (Osaka Restaurant). The starter (some kind of salmon terrine) was tasteless and the steak was without any exaggeration the worst meat that we had in Argentina. This was topped off by some very average wine.
We would not even have said anything if the show had been somewhat original, but in fact this really was very average too and the dancing did not even last for two hours. We did complain at the management of the venue, but our arguments were ignored and treated arrogantly.
If you are really into tango, then get a ticket without dinner, but do go somewhere else for your steak - ANY parrilla in Buenos Aires will be better, at a fraction of the cost.
