Review: Esquina Carlos Gardel
Buenos Aires
Friday, January 4, 2013
Our experience was a perfect “10” for the Esquina Carlos Gardel Tango Show. The four of us elected to be picked up at our hotel, and chose the dinner and tango show. We booked at the recommendation of our travel agent, and we are certainly happy with the choice! The shuttle arrived five minutes early, made a couple more stops at nearby hotels, and then we were delivered to the theatre’s front door at 8:45 pm. Our server, Cecelia, was prompt and attentive. The staff checked to be certain that we were satisfied with our seating, and we were. Dinner was a choice from half dozen appetizers, 4 entrees, and 4 desserts. We all made different selections, and all were 100% satisfied with the food and the service. There were generous refills of all drinks, soda, water, or wine. The white wine was not as good as the red, which was entirely drinkable. As we’d been told, the performance began at approx. 10 pm and lasted until midnight. All the dancers were skilled, their costumes intriguing, and the entire show was a joy to watch. There was a 7-piece orchestra. Some other reviewers have complained about the food. OK, it’s “dinner theatre,” and for that, the food was excellent. Book online for the best price, paying with a credit card or Pay Pal. Also, call as soon as you get in to Buenos Aires to confirm the night of your reservation, and the time that you’ll be picked up at your hotel. (Ours was not 100% accurate; not sure where the error occurred however we straightened it out with the ticket office.) Then, prepare to enjoy the show!

“Don't go for dinner, go for the show!”
Reviewed January 3, 2013

Our travel agent suggested this show and made the arrangements for us. Since we expected the food to be disappointing, we opted to have dinner on our own and just go for the show. We selected the the less expensive shared van transportation option, which was no big deal...kind of like one of those airport shuttles, they dropped off three groups before it was our turn, but it was painless, we were back at our hotel in about 20 minutes. We paid US$75 pp for the show and transportation both ways.

The theater was charming and the staff was was friendly and efficient. We didn't experience any of the aggressive behavior mentioned in some of the other reviews. We were seated in the balcony, right at the front edge, so we had a great view of the stage.

The dancers were great and I especially enjoyed the range of tango dances they performed -- the more senior dancers were charming and it was interesting to see how the tango has evolved. I quite enjoyed the modern dances. Our evening was great and it was definitely worth the money!

“Great Show”
Reviewed November 28, 2012

The show and dancing was great, but the food left a little to be desired, the steak was actually a little disappointing. Worth the money, though, I'm glad I went, a once in a life time experience~

“History and dance, fantastic show”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

This is clearly for tourists, but all tango is say those in Buenos Aires. A nice film showing the history of tango and the key character Esquina Carlos Gardel is good. Food excellent and dancing superb. Only drawback is rather large crowd, but takes place in a romantic, historic theatre.

“Overpriced and underwhelmed”
Reviewed November 22, 2012 via mobile

I will start with the positives. The tango was great. And that's why we came. Sure it's touristy but felt more authentic than anything we'd seen in La Boca. In particular the older dancers were a delight to watch. We had opted for show and drinks only and I'm certain this was the right decision. We were seated on the upper level and had a good view of the stage.

The transfer from our hotel got lost looking for the next hotel pickup so it took us almost an hour to get there.

The wine served is unlimited but barely drinkable, it tastes like vinegar. You'll be grateful the service is so slow.

The singers in between dances were both singing flat. It was actually quite unpleasant to listen to.

The staff were pushy, I expected the usual photo sale attempt but not half way through a dance. One of those times I wish my Spanish were better so I could have made my point more eloquently.

There's also a 10% compulsory service charge on top of the USD96 ... didn't help that our hotel had told us 90 dollars.

And finally, the audience were dreadful. Half clearly ignored the request not to use flash photography and the other half chatted throughout. Not the fault of the production but didn't help my enjoyment.

In summary, if this had been half the price, the audience had shut up and the staff had left us alone, I'd recommend it, but however good the dancing itself, it's left me feeling like I've been ripped off. They're clearly relying on clientele who regard this as a one off and unfortunately that shows in the whole experience.
