Owner description: In the neighbourhood of San Telmo it is located the most classic house of tango of all times, El Viejo Almacén. It offers shows since 1969 and preserves the architecture and atmosphere of tango culture. The house has a unique magic in which the cultural barrier between different nationalities ceases to exist and we all joined by one of the greatest expressions of any culture: the language of music. It has a proposal of Dinner & Show, with a menu of international cuisine a la carte and an extensive wine cellar with the best national wines. Then, any member of the public is delighted with an excellent show of tango composed by prestigious dancers, the famous Quintet of El Viejo Almacén and two highly recognized national singers, who play some of the traditional songs of tango´s history. The most acclaimed tango show in the world accompanied by fine cuisine, recalls the bygone era of tango and takes us back to times of outlaws and suburbs in the ground where tango has its roots ... Buenos Aires.

We found Viejo Almacen through Tango Tix. They were excellent. We knew we did not want a Las Vegas style production and were really only interested in tango. we also did not want to have a meal as part of our production. After we contacted Tango Tix and told them exactly what interested us, they recommended Viejo Almacen. Originally were were going to have dinner at 1880 before the show but it was closed the night we were there. We ate at La Brigada which is within walking distance of the venue. Tango Tix also arranged for us to be picked up at the restaurant and taken to the show and then driven back to our apartment afterwards. This was the only glitch. We did not realize the transportation was arranged by the venue and coordinated by Tango Tix. The van had not come to pick us up by 9:45 p.m. so we walked to the show. we later learned the van was late due to a demonstration on the main road to the venue. Other than that, I thought Tango Tix did a great job with helping us select the venue and changing details.

Now about the show. The venue is very intimate and there is not a bad seat in the house. THey give you champagne throughout the show (very generous) but do remind you that service is not included. There are only 6 dancers and they are fabulous. They do group dances and dances with only two people. It could not have been better. They also had an indigenous band play. It too was remarkable. They only thing I wasn't very keen on was a couple of singers. But we were only there for the tango. They do have a photographer come around that charges $10 for a photo. I definitely recommend this show and booking it through Tango Tix.

We went there for the tango show, which was really good, but loved the indigenous band even more. The food was okay but nothing special. It really was the 4 man band playing Andean music that made the experience memorable. When they played Alma Llanera and El Condor Pasa it was spirited and sensational. I got my money's worth.

I have no way to judge whether the dancers' performances were technically correct but I was very entertained by the varied format of the show which includes narratives on the history of the venue and the tango, vocals, musicians and several interpretations of the tango. We were in the second row and had excellent seats--some people had partially blocked views and were standing in the back at times. We had the dinner at the companion restaurant first and were treated to a preview of the dancing. Dinner was good--the steak was tender and nicely prepared; if the food was not particularly memorable it certainly did not detract from the very enjoyable evening.

If you are in Buenos Aires you can't leave without seeing some Tango. A friend had been to a couple of places and advised that this was the best. For 500 pesos you get hotel pick-up, a fun show with a couple of drinks included and then dropped back at your hotel around midnight. The whole evening was very well organised. There is a dinner package but I was advised against that. I was picked up at 9.30pm. When I entered the venue there there was no sign that anyone had eaten there. Perhaps they don't offer a meal on a Tuesday night.

The venue has a lot of character. The show started with a film about the history of El Viejo Almacen and the tango - it was worth seeing. Then the action commenced with a band: two accordions, bass, violin and piano. After a couple of numbers from the band the first of the tango dancers appeared - very professional and very accomplished. Four tango couples performed during the night as did two solo singers, not to my taste but the Argentines and Spanish seemed to like them. An indigenous band also performed, adding variety to the evening. There was a fun atmosphere to the show which made it very enjoyable.

A good fun night.

After reading reviews, my parents and I decided to eat an early dinner at our hotel instead of opting to have dinner at the venue. Good decision!

We booked non-VIP seats at the recommendation of our hotel concierge but we still had fabulous seats - second row and center. We still were given free champagne and wine with the show.

The show itself was fantastic! There was a great mixture of music (tango musicians and singers), and well as tango. There were several numbers with as many as 4 couples on the stage at one time, and several with only one couple. There was also a good mixture of traditional and technical dances. Overall - beautiful and extremely entertaining!!

The folk musicians stole the show... a great addition and so much fun! We had a great evening.
