We took a walking tour (english) with a man named Simon- he offers free walking tours (you just tip) and we found him outside the cemetary at 11am on Tuesday. I wouldn't have enjoyed the cemetary as much without the tour. He offered a lot of interesting stories and explained a lot of the history.

An active cemetery, circled by a brick-made wall (with almost military details) surrounded by restaurants, cafés, night-clubs and shopping-centers? Yes, that can only happen here! The cemetery houses an incredible collection of familiar tombs in all imaginable architectural styles recorded in human history. Evita Perón`s body is here, and so most of Argentinean figures and aristocrats. Excellent food and wine is found in cozy places (for all pockets, for there are pizza parlors too) all around the high red walls. Very nice parks surround the place, which also houses an interesting cultural center, and a recycled monastery, today a lovely food and shops place. From it`s top, the imposing building of the University of Buenos Aires Law School, can be sighted.

It was definately one of the best days of my trip to Buenos Aires. the Recoleta Cemetery is a must-see! the tombs are beautifully decorated with sculptures, and everywhere you look there's something nice to appreciate. Lovely art fair on saturdays!

Recoleta has something for everyone and it is all with a few blocks walk--be it an upscale shop, top restaurant, local food, antiques, museums, you can find it easily and safely.

Interesting area, large weekend market after midday Saturday, near to the cemetery, the tulip, Hard Rock cafe and other eateries.
