Owner description: The most celebrated Argentineans, including Eva Peron and her family, are buried at this elaborate cemetery, where mausoleums replicate chapels, pyramids and Greek temples.

Worth a visit and not just to see Eva Peron's resting place, but to see the statues and art work throughout the cemetery.

This was a interesting cemetery; it was a quite elaborate and peaceful city of the dead. Of course being able to spend a moment at the burial site of Eva Peron and family was memorable.

I am very fond of cemeteries and have visited several extraordinary ones around the world. Recoleta is not expansive like the huge Staglieno Cemetery in Genoa, but packs thousands of mausolea within a few acres. As you stroll along its shady avenues you will discover some astonishing examples in a wide variety of styles and often covered with delightfully over-ripe sculptural detail. Many of the family tombs are quite small with loved ones stacked up within. Evita is entombed in her family's (Duarte) mausoleum, but following some unfortunate and ghoulish incidents encased in concrete some thirty feet below grade. (Juan Peron is buried in another of the city's cemeteries.)Less melancholy is the adjacent Recoleta Church near the entrance. This 'city of the dead' is surrounded beyond its walls by a very lively assortment of restaurants and night clubs.

The cemetary was very impressive. At times a bit eerie, a few of the doors were broken and the cats would hang out in there, which made it seem stranger.

There are tour guides inside for a price and we were solicited for money outside the cemetary, with a guy who hang drew a fairly useless map on a piece of paper. I would steer clear of them.

To navigate I downloaded the endless mile recoleta cemetary app, which helped us to find out way. They point out 25 tombs, which had pretty interesting stories behind them. We wandered the area ofr about two and half hours. There are lots of opportunities for great pictures so bring your camera!

It was recommended to us to visit Recoleta Cemetery when we were in BA last year. Well worth the visit to see the mausoleums and wander around the "streets". We stumbled around on our own, but take a guided tour if you are short on time. We found our way to Eva (Evita) Peron's tomb - just look for the crowds.
