Owner description: The most celebrated Argentineans, including Eva Peron and her family, are buried at this elaborate cemetery, where mausoleums replicate chapels, pyramids and Greek temples.

We spent a few hours being guided around the cemetery. A little macabre but interesting. (Multi-storey burial plots.) Visited the usual tombs such as Eva Peron's. The cemetery fronts onto a square and there is a great café (Café La Biela) on the other side - "Coffee with Juan Manuel Fangio" !

I was told to visit the famous Recoleta Cemetery and I am very glad I did! It's very clean and feels more like a park than a cemetery. The tombstones are amazing and the entire place is adorned with statues. We had a guide and she told us the stories of the tombs, which were very interesting and we saw Eva's grave as well...

The variety of architecture in mausoleum design makes Recoleta Cemetery a pleasure to explore -- gothic, celtic, art deco, and very plain designs vie for the visitor's attention, but not as aggressively as the resident cats who snake between your legs and purr as you pet them. This cemetery instilled a sense of real serenity in me.

This is like a walled city of the dead at the heart of the Recoleta district. Once inside, you forget you are in the city at all, as you wander the narrow alleys between the hundreds of enormous tombs and vaults. Once off the beaten track, you find yourself alone, with maybe a cat for company. Many ornate coffins are visible through the windows of the tombs. A few tombs are in disrepair, and we saw coffins exposed to the air, and crumbling away, high above our heads....

Altogether, I found the place rather oppressive and claustrophobic...it was a relief to leave. However, the experience was memorable, and a "must do" I think.

this cemetery is more like a small town on its own due to the neatly arranged tombs and street names. the epitaphs are very grand, some ex-argentine presidents are buried here as well.
