This is one place I did not want to visit, however, we went for a walk and ended up there. Simon, one of the 'free' guides out the front offered to take us for a tour. We were pleased to hear an English voice so agreed. What a pleasant surprise! He was very interesting, and was able to tell us a lot about Argentinian history based on the families there. I did find it creepy, but fascinating. It was a whole village of mausoleums, in varying states of disrepair, some simple, but most elaborate. Most of Argentina's elite seem to be represented there. i would recommend a visit, but definitely with a guide.

We visited as a part of our City Tour and found it very interesting. You need a guide to explain the History of the tombs. The size and number of Mausoleums was amazing. It was also something to see the tomb of Eva Peron.

In my opinion, this place was well worth the visit, but seriously creepy. I wasn't expecting to be able to see coffins, to see so many mausoleums in disrepair, and even feral cats (sleeping on some coffins!). Yet, it was also a really beautiful and sort of otherworldly place.

If you know anything about Argentine history or culture, this is a must see. Tombs of presidents, literary greats, etc. And even if you don't know much about Argentina, the sheer size and impressiveness of the mausolea will amaze. The Basilica next door, Nuestra Señora del Pilar, has a charming museum of colonial artifacts and early Argentine history.
