If you are in BA then you definitely have to go to Plaza de Mayo. There is much history and beautiful architecture surrounding this plaza. We visited three times during our stay in BA as it was very central to everything.

If you want to explore the city, what better place then to start in the heart of downtown at Plaza de Mayo? From here you can tour the Casa Rosada (weekends only) and go into the Metropolitan Cathedral or head up Defensa to San Telmo or down past the office buildings to Florida Street. Another nice walk is down Avenida de Mayo towards Plaza de Congreso. Along the way you'll pass by worthwhile tourist attractions like Cafe Tortoni (tango!) and Palacio Barolo (Dante's inferno).

You will need a guide to explain you the meaning and how they are significant in Argentinian history. It's in a great position, in the middle of touristic attractions

The Plaza itself is not much, but the protests signs around the Plaza are really interesting to look at. We would recommend going on Thursday between 3:30 and 4 to watch the Madres de la Plaza de Mayo walk. It is moving and reflects some of the history of the country. If you google the organization, you can read more about them before you go. I have interviewed some of the Madres for a project, and I really think these women and their supporters are amazing. Since the plaza is touristy, there are some people hassling you there, so just beware.

The plaza itself is not very beautiful, but key monuments are around, as the government palace, the main church and the historical building (Cabildo).
