Ayacucho Palace Hotel

A very basic accommodation but in an excellent location and very reasonable rates. It's worth making a fuss to get a decent room - we were shown a terrible room to start with, and then they moved us to a larger one. If you are on the street side you get a small balcony but it is very noisy as buses and cars race up and down outside seemingly all day and night. No fridge or safe but hairdryer in the bathroom and clean towels. Very helpful staff. Just down the road in the direction of Ricoleta cemetery you'll find Grants - a help yourself buffet restaurant with parilla and excellent steaks, fish or salads. Eat a much or as little as you like for approx 30 pesos each.

It is undoubtedly cheap and well situated. The reception and breakfast areas are nice and staff is friendly.
However, rooms are not as clean as one would wish (with a constant smell of mould in the air), dust is ubiquous, bedsheets are far from perfect, and one barely has room enough for one suitcase. Bathrooms are the worst feature, nowhere near clean enough to feel comfortable.

For less than US$ 100.00 per night, you can be at one of the best locations in Buenos Aires, the Recoleta Area, just a few blocks away from the Recoleta Cemetary, the nice bar/restaurant "Locos por El Futbol", the Alvear Street (with lots of high fashion boutiques like Armani, Versace, Gucci,...) and the Hard Rock Cafe.

The hotel is old, but very nice. My room was small, but it's ok if you intend to use it only as a place to sleep and take a shower (as I did). The Staff is great and the breakfast is good, but it could use a little variation (it's the same thing every day).

Oh, and the old elevator is great. I just loved it.

I stayed 7 nights in Ayacucho Palace Hotel. I found the best cost/benefit by far. The hotel has 2 stars, but I think it could be classified as 3, the breakfast is good, the staff great, and the location is excellent.
The room was small and a little bit old, but was clean. The cost was about $55/night, in august 2008.

The best thing about this hotel is its location in the Recoleta Area. It is within a few blocks of the Recoleta Cemetary where Eva Peron's tomb is located. Everything worth seeing and visiting in this area is easy to get to by walking. Our room was small and very basic, but clean. This is an old hotel with dated interiors. However, there is a restaurant connected to the hotel and a nice breakfast is provided. The staff spoke English and was helpful when asked questions. The $80 USA a night price was quite good for the location.

The Ayacucho Palace Hotel....

I have no idea where exactly the word "palace" fits in.

Contrary to what the elaborate name might imply, the APH is a small, nondescript hotel in BAs prestigious neighborhood of Recoleta. With 5 floors and approximately 70 rooms, it's quaint, tidy, and a great place to kick back after a hard day's worth of sightseeing. Sure, there's no gleaming white-tiled bathroom nor are the beds super-comfy. Most rooms can seem downright tiny as well. However, for those hardcore independent travelers who couldn't care less about whether if their hotel has a spa or a golf course, it's a good choice. The sheets are clean, the bathrooms are very neat and sanitary, and most importantly, the air-conditioners actually WORK.

Recently, the lobby and restaurant area has been renovated, giving it a much cleaner look... but don't expect increased variety in the included breakfast. The standard cafe con leche with some bread, cheese, and ham is all one should expect. A friendly waiter actually walks around serving the coffee, as opposed to having to get it yourself.

Above all, it's location in Recoleta, is both a curse and a blessing. It's in one of the more posh areas of BA, so it's much safer than it would be in say... La Boca or lower San Telmo. One can come back at around 3am (though I can't fathom why you would) and the only irritation they would encounter would be the occasional canine fecal matter mishap. Of course, being in Recoleta means it's also quite far from the central area of BA around the Casa Rosada, and you may have to find other means of transport other than good 'ole walking. (Taxis in BA are crazy cheap, so no problem there)

So, now for the price... well, for a triple room it's 300 Argentine pesos, or roughly a 100USD. it descends by 50 per person.
Hence, a single should be 200 pesos, a quadruple, 350 pesos. Not too cheap... but you're probably paying for location more than anything.

Though it may not be a real 'palace' the Ayacucho Palace Hotel is a good option as a base to explore northwestern BA, especially in the high season when rooms may be scarce. A good backup option.

Note: Have fun working the elevators :P
