Alvear Palace Hotel
Ranked #11 of 444 Hotels in Buenos Aires
Reviewed September 1, 2014

I have stayed here many times and cannot find a better place then this. Sophistication is the word that comes to my mind when describing this jewel. From its decor from the belle epoque with stunning Luis XVI furniture to its wonderful service, staying at the Alvear Palace gives you exactly that, a sensation that you are in a palace indeed!
The breakfast buffet is one of the best in the world, as well as its afternoon Tea service -do not miss this!-
Located in the upscale neighborhood of Recoleta will allow you to walk around its beautiful plazas and experience a nice merienda in one of their Cafes.

This is truly one of the best hotels in Argentina. The hotel was renovated around 11 years ago,I remember an article on the Architectural Digest. The hotel is old world style. Butler and valet service is exceptional. Rooms are ample and comfortable. One of the best breakfast buffets I have seen. A great place to stay

My teenage aged son and I stayed 4 nights at the Alvear Palace on a first time trip to Buenos Aires. I have stayed at several great hotels in my life ( 4 Seasons, Montreaux Palace, Madrid Ritz) and the Alvear Palace is up there with the best of them. The decor is gorgeous, the beds super comfortable, the rooms quiet, the service professional, efficient and polite and the neighborhood the best in Buenos Aires. Room service food fantastic, and the restaurant in the hotel is one of the best in the city. I was concerned about some reviews that said it was " stuffy" or unfriendly, given I was traveling with a teenage boy and I am currently a Southern Californian used to a more relaxed or informal style ( although I would never wear shorts or similar attire anywhere!). I found the staff very helpful and polite. My son had a toothache and the butler on the floor ( each floor has a butler) immediately got an ice pack for him and offered to go get aspirins at the drug store if needed ( we had some). While I found the concierges ( especially Esmeralda at night) and all the staff very friendly and helpful, this clearly is a grand hotel where there is an expected level of behavior and protocol from guests, and I would not recommend this hotel for families traveling with small children if such are not well behaved.

Everything was superb with this hotel we stayed in a junior suite (the second lowest category) and it was very comfortable.

The streets feel very safe to walk around I brought my DSLR and took photos with no hint of danger.

If you are looking to change $USD via dollar blue there is a place behind the hotel. Although strictly illegal changing money this way is widely accepted and the daily rate is published in the newspaper.

At the back of the hotel Posadas 1564 there is a small shopping arcade(Galeria Promenade). On the right as you walk in there is a shop completely covered up with a picture of a cow. Press the door bell next to the door and they will buzz you in. Once inside it is like a small bank with security screens counting machines etc. We got 12.5 pesos to the dollar here with no bargaining (8 August) compared with 8.5 on the official rate. The $2000 we changed gave 25,000 pesos compared with 17,000 if we had swapped officially.

It all sounds a bit dodgy but is very easy and safe once you are there. There were plenty of Argentinians doing the safe thing and we can't speak any intelligible Spanish.

Hopefully this helps you. Enjoy your stay we loved it.

Beautiful hotel which has been kept as glorious as the day it opened. Very grand and the rooms are beautiful and immaculate, the service very professional. Close to cemetery and restaurants and we even walked to Palermo (long but through amazing parklands) and to the Obelisco and Teatro Colon (15-20 mins). Recoleta is a beautiful suburb in itself. I found the price good for what you get, we booked a basic room and were upgraded which we weren't expecting so it was a good surprise, all rooms would be nice though.

This hotel is in the same chain as the Alvear Art Hotel. This hotel is luxurious, beautiful, and conveniently located. HOWEVER. For GBP£200 less you could have a room in the Alvear Art Hotel. A brand new, modern equilivalent. So if you want luxury, but don't want the price tag, I would recommend to seriously consider the Alvear Art. If you are a millionaire then this should be wonderful though.
