In South America it turns out the answer to this question is more often “no” than “si”. So the idea of travelling around this continent for six months with our next to non-existent Spanish knowledge was a non-starter. With this in mind we set about looking for some Spanish lessons in Buenos Aires, the starting point of our trip, to set us off on the right foot.
We stumbled upon Expanish and when we saw their Ultimate Spanish Crash Course we knew that we had found what we were looking for, and now that we’re finished (sad face) I can tell you straight up that this course completely surpassed our expectations.
The course is designed for people who need to learn Spanish quickly, in a practical context, and with the main focus on phrases and vocab rather than grammar. It runs over five days with two hours of lessons each day and each day focuses on a different scenario, for example, day one is all about food and eating out (very important!), day two concentrates on shopping, etc. We chose to do the whole course but if you prefer you can pick and choose certain lessons if you only have a limited amount of time.
Our teacher, Pablo, spoke perfect English and created a friendly and fun atmosphere for the lessons, even taking the time to recommend restaurants, places to visit and super useful websites. He also tailored our lessons for our trip, helping Sam out with his vegetarian specific needs and informing us about different pronunciations/vocab in the different countries we plan to visit (fruitallas vs fresas!). ¡Muchos gracias, buddy!
Despite only having 10 hours of lessons in total, we both managed to come away armed with not only a whole host of practical phrases to get us out of those “smile and nod” situations, but also a solid understanding of how the language is structured and a load of useful knowledge about Argentina and Argentine culture.
