Stayed in many hostels throughout Latin America and this was by far my worst choice. I had read the bad reviews and chose it anyway due to its location which is the one and only thing that recommends it although it's still 5 blocks from the main road. Stayed in the double bunk dorm room right off the kitchen. Asked every day if there was a possibility of having the shared bathroom between the two dorm rooms unlocked so our side could use it too, and everyday denied. Had to use the disgusting bathroom used by staff and everyone using the kitchen. Always had to wait to use it, never clean, and if someone had taken a shower it was wet wall to wall.
The dorm room meant for four people was not much bigger than a closet. They did happen to get a wardrobe in there but for what purpose- it neither locked nor held much of anything. The mattresses are a piece of foam and the pillow looked as it had never been washed/replaced. The fan had so much dust/grime on it that it was black. All communal areas were old, worn out, dirty and right in the middle of the hostel so if people were up late talking, it kept up everyone in the hostel as that central area amplifies all noises.
Staff seemed to go out of their way to be rude. Internet was down and when I mentioned this to the desk person on duty, instead of a, "I realize the internet is out, I apologize for the inconvenience, we're working on it", I received a half scream of "It's not my fault! I can't fix it. There's nothing I can do about it!"
Breakfast is not worth mentioning. Decor was as if to say: oh look, we tried. I was prepared to look over some major faults of this place going in as it is the cheapest option in Palermo. But if you're going to bother at all with running a hostel: clean it, make it someplace you would stay and teach some hospitality 101 to your staff.
