Owner description: A "Pay What You Want" tour, Buenos Aires Local Tours, is a great introduction to the past and present of Buenos Aires. You'll travel by public bus, subway and foot to see the Buenos Aires most tourists miss. Visiting Abasto, Congreso and Plaza de Mayo and it's the perfect way to get to know the city as a local does. Run by English & American expats, there are regular group "Pay What You Want" tours, and a private custom tour service is also available if you would like to visit other areas such as Recoleta (& the cemetery), La Boca or San Telmo.

We took this tour the morning we arrived in Buenos Aires and are delighted that we did - it provides an excellent introduction to the city by showing you how the somewhat confusing transport systems work and giving you a good overview of some of the key areas. Also having someone as knowledgeable as Jonathan to ask questions of is great if you are planning to spend some time on the city, and he kindly offers to send round a list of his recommendations to those who want them. Overall highly recommended, and I'd say that the sooner you do it after arriving the more you will appreciate it.

I'm not going to echo the statements of many other reviewers as to how great and informative this tour was (which it was) but I do want to repeat the advice that you should really do this on Day One of your stay in Buenos Aires. It will give you a good feel for the city, teach you about busses and the Subte, and give you some ideas as to where to explore in greater detail.

Thanks Jonathan!

I am a very experienced solo traveler- have been to over 100 countries, taken lots and lots of tours of different cities and locations. This was definitely one of the best if not THE best. Jonathan is incredible. British guy, living in BA for more than 4-5 years. Smart as hell. Has all the qualities for a perfect guide. First- knowledge. Since I am very much interested in the history of spain-europe-indiginous people-Argentina, during the tour I asked him tens and tens of questions. His fund of knowledge is amazing. There was not one thing he didn't know and couldn't elaborate on in a very detailed way.
But that's not the only thing that makes him a good guide. Jonathan has a sharp and special kind of sense of humor. He also is a master in telling fascinating stories. this combo is a great one: prepare to laugh and enjoy numerous anecdotes and stories about the city.
Also- this is not going to be a tour only of the "pink house", "Eva Peron cemetary" etc. He will take you to hidden gems in the city- that no other tour will take you too.

And By the way- I was in BA for a wedding of a good friend. My boss took the tour too, a day prior, and he absolutely loved it!

I really think that a visit in BA is not going to be the same without Jonathans tour. You will learn so much about Argenina- and in such an amusing, fun and interesting way!!

By the way- this is what Jonathan does. He does not charge money but bascially living on tips- so if you like it, be generous with him.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!

I took the tour with Jonathan on a Saturday and it was a really unique, great experience. Unique because Jonathan is both a local, with a deep knowledge and experience of Buenos Aires, and a foreigner who is able to talk about the Argentinian culture and customs from an outsider point of view that makes sense to other foreigners. We did a Tango tour (Abasto) and visited Plaza de Mayo and other places in a tour that took about 4 hours. The group was small (5 people) and there was an intellectually stimulating, fun and friendly atmosphere all around. We asked Jonathan a lot of questions about Argentinian history and culture, and he was not only willing but also very interested to take the conversation to whatever direction we wanted, providing thoughtful, knowledgable comments. It is a pleasure to interact with such an educated and fun person as Jonathan and a great luck to have him as a tour guide!

Given we had been on 2 other "free" walking tours, we are delighted to report that this is so much better. Check the website buenosaireslocaltours.com just in case, but in principle go to the steps within Plaza Italia. Easy via subte green line D. At 11am Jonathan will be waiting for you. Jonathan takes a very practical approach - by the end of his tour you will know how to get round the city by understanding addresses/distances on a map, the bus system and the metro/subte. This learning is included as part of a very interesting walk that included Carlos Gardel, Abasto, a colectivo public bus, the A line wooden metro car, Congresso, Casa de Rosado and a lot more including the most superb explanation of Palacio Barolo - Jonathan knows his stuff. All this is delivered with an obvious passion for the subject, tinged with humour and a hint of sadness as demonstrated when he accurately described the Windmill Building next to Congress as being a snapshot of recent Argentinian history. Rich, opulent, political, poor, neglected, waiting for the next chapter. A very good analogy. The walk was well paced and even though the duration was four hours there was never a moment when we were bored. In addition to the walk, you can also tap Jonathans local knowledge which is extensive. We asked for some additional information which was not to hand on the day but was delivered by email within 24 hours. This is billed as a "free tour" but we defy you to walk away giving nothing. We willingly gave our tip - reckon it was excellent value
