“A bit too small”
Reviewed May 21, 2013

Unfamiliar with the art of Xul Solar, we were hoping for a bit of a Salvador Dali experience where you find out more about the artist and see a bit more about his crazy world. The paintings were nice and the rooms very interesting, but it's a shame you are not allowed in more areas of the building. There are a few interesting artefacts and the paintings are pretty, but overall a bit of a let down and missed opportunity.

“A very interesting museum”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

This museum is solely dedicated Xul Solar; an artist I had not heard of before coming to Buenos Aires. I found him a very interesting artist and the museum well worth a visit. It's quite small and mainly focuses on his paintings.

“Very disappointed”
Reviewed March 23, 2013

We visited this museum having seen photographs of Xul Solar's house in the 2008 Taschen book Living in Argentina. He's not an artist we had ever heard of before but he looked fascinating based on his house and interests. We started by looking at the display of XS's pictures. Depending on the timeing during his long painting chronology there are Cubist influences, lots of surrealism, and some reflections of Chagall; but the overall impression of Xul's oeuvre is rather dull, same-ish and pale orange. Looking next to visit the domestic quarters we were very disappointed to discover that access to the house part of the site is never open to the public - apparently because the appartment is so 'delicate'. As this was the whole point of our visit we were most annoyed and upset. 20 pesos each wasted.

The museum website says, in both English and Spanish: "..... the Foundation preserves the personal dwelling of the artist that lodges as well his library of near 3.500 volumes. The house will soon be open for public visit." From what we had seen in the Taschen book we had assumed that the website needed updating, but from what the unhelpful woman on the ticket desk said, the website is just lying. Visitors, be warned: the interesting aspect of this man's life can be viewed only by the foundation's own staff!

“By Far One of the Five Best Museums in my Perspective”
Reviewed December 13, 2012

Museo Xul Solar is a fantastic museum and far more interesting than the average museum. I truly loved the fascinating work of Xul Solar, it was just so creative. They even had a modified piano made by Xul! It was just extraordinary how how original the art was, I just loved it.

“This is a very good visit but not a must see”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

If you have the time, an interest in discovering a bit more into a person known as "painter of the unimaginable", this is a good place to visit. A "must see" by no means more of a pleasure should you be of the museum visiting sort.

This interior of the building should be opened up, the gift shop is missing a huge monetary potential and the foundation needs to have more items on display. This man was crazy good and prolific. It's almost shameful they don't detail his life a bit more. The staff should visit the Evita museum to see how it is done - in terms of presenting the personality of a person with a rich background history.

This place is quite, the staff is distant, and the visit is nice enough. It is off the beaten track but worth it if you have the time.
