“Quiet Hotel, Service Needs to Improve”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

First off, there was the hugest live cockroach in our room and when we asked if we could have a discount, we were given late check out as compensation - live cockroaches, usually this huge, usually give you a free night last time i checked. The staff, at least in summer time when the hotel is very quiet, were quite young and inexperienced. We asked that a tour guide be arranged and the front desk staff told us they found us a deal at 250 pesos. Well, it was 250 USD (or 7 times as much) and our tour started with tension with the tour operator used by the hotel who demanded payment in cash up front and nobody had agreed on how many pesos we owed. The swimming area was not set up even by 4pm in the afternoon, and the restaurant we were recommended had not very good food.

The hotel itself has quiet modern rooms and a nice atrium breakfast area and is very well located.

Room Tip: any of the rooms are good

Dear johncaro,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback on Algodon Mansion. It is much to our regret that you left our hotel unsatisfied. I have reviewed your feedback in detail with our housekeeping personnel, and you might be happy to know that in all of the three years since our hotel has been open, no person on our experienced staff has ever themselves seen, or heard a guest’s report, of any type of insect such as you describe anywhere on the premises. We do employ routine preventative measures, as would be expected of any luxury hotelier, and have done so since our opening. While we do not intend to dispute either your assertion or the possibility of such in this forum, I truly regret to have to say that it is not our policy to provide a complimentary night under the circumstance with which you say you are familiar. Given that you were only booked to stay with us for a single night in total, perhaps you’ll allow us to arrange a special provision for you the next time you visit.

We deeply regret that there was any misunderstanding regarding the tour package quote. Rates for the City Tour company that we use are always priced in American dollars, and are so indicated on all of their marketing materials. We appreciate your calling our attention to the potential for a misunderstanding, and we have taken action to help prevent this from possibly happening again in the future.

The satisfaction and well-being of each of our guests is most importance to us, and we do hope you’ll allow us another opportunity to exceed your expectations at a future date in time.

Best regards,

Gregor Beck, General Manager of Algodon Mansion

My wife and I stayed 4 nights and were upgraded to an imperial suite, which had a balcony on a quiet side of the hotel. The roof-top pool is very small, but it is a nice place to relax. We found everyone at the hotel to be extremely helpful in arranging tours and dinner reservations and suggesting museums and places to shop. When we had trouble printing crossword puzzles for the flight home, they offered to print some for us along with our boarding passes. They also offered to bring breakfast to our room on our last morning, since we had an 8am pickup. One other note - of all the places we stayed on our trip to Chile and Argentina, the croissants here were the best!

Spent 4 nights in the Algodon Mansion in BA in November of this year. We had reserved a small suite, but I had emailed the hotel ahead of time, noting it was a special occasion and any additional considerations would be more than welcomed. When we arrived we discovered we had been upgraded to the Royal Suite, an approximately 1,300 sq ft stunner. Really did feel like "royalty" for several days. Staff very accommodating, location perfect. Only small quibble: while the massage therapist (a lovely woman from Canada) was fantastic, the spa itself leaves something to be desired. Very small and cramped with lots of outside noise drifting in during massage. Minor issue in an otherwise splendid stay.

Algodon Mansion came highly recommended via this site as well as Andrew Harper. So needless to say we had high expectations and we'd say that they were met! We stayed for 2 nights in December after spending a week in Patagonia. Here are some of our key takeaways for your reading or research pleasure:

Location - It was great. I don't know the city of Buenos Aries well but the Recoleta neighborhood was perfect for us. We felt safe. There are restaurants, shops, and other nice hotels in the area. We were a short walk to the Cemetery which I would recommend visiting. I wouldn't call Recoleta "happening", but it was very comfortable.

Room - The room was very nice. I can't recall exactly, but think we had one of the mid-priced rooms. It was spacious, and the bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom may deserve to be called huge. My only critique of the room is that it took about 5 minutes (including a call to the front desk) to figure out how to use the ipod dock. Turns out most of the room is controlled by a display near the bed which I didn't find intuitive to use at first. Once I figured it out though it was like piloting a spaceship. That little display puts a lot of power over that room at your fingertips.

Service - No complaints about the service. I find that a lot of hotels (well maybe not a lot but some I have stayed at recently) have this butler service idea. I think it's great on paper and makes you feel important, but we didn't really use it that much. That said our butler was very friendly and introduced us to the room when we checked in. Service at the front desk was friendly as it was at the bar. The bartender broke out the map to highlight some bars/restaurants we should visit.

Spa - The spa is on the top floor and is small, or boutique, as is the hotel, so it is a match. The wife and I both had good treatments up there. Afterwards you can go out onto the roof and sit the by the tiny pool and catch some rays if you'd like.

Tips - Make sure to ask about the lobby bar and the cigar bar on the roof when you book your stay if you're interested in either. They may be closed at certain hours or on certain days that you might not expect. This could be a timing of the season when you are visiting thing but I would inquire so as to not be surprised if you find yourself looking for a drink and the bar happens to be closed which it was one night we were there. As for other tips we had a real fun day (even though it was raining) visiting the antiques market in San Telmo. If you love shopping, flea markets, or antiques, definitely go there and budget a good part of the day. We were a bit rushed and regretted it. Some cool stuff on offer. Also, there is no gym at the hotel, which you will either find a great thing, a bad thing, or be like, who cares? Just pointing it out for you.

Conclusion - If you are a lover of boutique hotels and also a touch of luxury, then I would say that Algodon Mansion fits the bill on both accounts. We also stayed at the great Park Hyatt for 2 nights on this stay, and I will have a tough time choosing which one to return to on our next visit but might lean towards Algodon because we love the small luxury hotels.

My daughter and I just spent 2 days at the Algodon Mansion following a 16 day cruise. I wish it had been a 12 day cruise and we could have spent a week in this hotel. Safely nestled among private mansions and within walking distance to the most exclusive Buenos Aires Mall, boutique restaurants, this hotels is a pure slice of pleasure. The rooms were divinely spacious and privately located. The staff was as accommodating, with a sincere desire to be helpful.

Room Tip: I don't believe there is a "bad" room.

My sixteen year old daughter and I spent three days here and were so impressed with everything the hotel has to offer. Their driver picked us up from the airport and in the backseat of the car we were treated to fresh bottles of water and a tin of macaroons. On my daughter's birthday, the staff brought up a cake. The attention to detail was truly appreciated. The location is excellent and within easy walking distance to the cemetary, Evita's tomb and some of the lovely museums. There are shops and wonderful restaurants right around the corner as well. Each time we went out we felt like we were returning to an oasis. The staff was stellar. When we asked for restaurant recommendations, instead of offering up the usual tourist options, they gave us suggestions that would appeal to my daughter and they were excellent. We ate steak in Palermo Hollywood at Miranda a very cool and hip restaurant and the next night went to a very funky yet exceptional italian restaurant. They also suggested a trip to MALBA which we loved and the fun and trendy areas of Palermo Soho and Hollywood. Our suite was beautifully appointed and extremely spacious. we would return in a heartbeat.

This was pure bliss. From wonderful, helpful staff to the most fabulous suite. It was massive and outstandingly decorated . Beautiful coffee table books, luxury linen and a spacious bathroom. It is also nicely situated in the area. It's well worth the expense!
