My husband and I stayed here for three nights in January 2014.
Check-in was straight forward and after requesting a quiet room we were given a room at the back, on a high floor, at the end of a corridor. The room was very quiet, clean and comfortable with a safe, air conditioning and a flat screen tv (with BBC World News). The only difference between this and our Ibis room in Rio de Janeiro was that there wasn’t a fridge. The bathroom had a good walk in shower with plenty of hot water all day. A soap and shampoo were provided along with a hairdryer and the towels were lovely and soft.
The double bed was very comfortable once again and we slept well and awoke refreshed ready to explore Buenos Aires. Breakfast first though and we thought the Ibis breakfast was very good with plenty of selection and availability including cereals, yogurts, baskets full of fresh fruit, breads, croissants, cheese, ham, scrambled eggs, etc. The coffee was out of a machine and was good and strong with hot milk available too. It was indeed very good value for money and set us up for the day.
We thought the location of the hotel was excellent as it was very central and convenient for sightseeing on foot or by public transport. There were numerous places to eat and drink nearby and in particular an empanada restaurant just across the road which served lovely snacks and drinks for very reasonable prices. There was also a supermarket up the road where drinks and snacks, amongst other things, to take back to the hotel could be purchased. The official exchange rate at that time was around 8 Reals to the US Dollar, but a much better rate was possible when exchanging cash in Florida Street via the people shouting “Cambio/Exchange”. In this case it was possible to get around 12/13 Reals to the US Dollar, which made everything much cheaper and better value. Do bring plenty of US Dollars as you will get much better exchange rates.
Wifi was free and available throughout the hotel as was local information from reception. The bar there served drinks and hot snacks for what seemed like reasonable prices and the staff were pleasant and friendly.
We enjoyed our short stay there and certainly walked a lot around the city. When we did use the buses, the locals were always very willing to try and help us to reach our destinations and suggest some of the best places to see and visit. On one occasion we had a problem with the ticket machine accepting our coins and a gentleman even offered to pay for us. We experienced a lot of kindness there, but we would also suggest being extremely vigilant in looking after your possessions as we met unfortunate people who had had handbags stolen from them in the street. We wore money belts when travelling or else left all valuables in the room safes.
If we should return to Buenos Aires then we would not hesitate to stay once more at the Ibis Obelisco.
