“An Oasis in the "Land of Beef"”
Reviewed March 15, 2011

My wife and I have been in BA for 11 days now and we have had some wonderful dinners, but one just can't eat these heavy Argentinean meals every day. We were looking for a change. We discovered the Garden Restaurant on TA and decided to try it. It is only 6 blocks from our apartment which is also very convenient.

The restaurant is quite small, 7 tables for four and two tables for 6. However, unlike most chinese restaurants there are white tablecloths and cloth napkins on all the tables. We arrived at 8:30 pm and surprise, there were already 3 tables with diners eating. We were promptly seated and given menus (with English subtitles) and served bread and Italian bread sticks (which i thought a bit unique for a Chinese restaurant) but they were fresh and good.

We ordered hot and sour soup for a starter and Kung Pao chicken and a fried pork and noodle dish for the main course. The hot and sour soup was good but a bit different. My wife and I make what we think is a good hot and sour soup. This soup had the hot component and the sour component and most of the right ingredients, tofu, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and sesame oil, BUT it was made with a beef stock not the normal chicken stock. After a few bites the taste grew on you and it was quite good. We have certainly had much worse in other Chinese restaurants in China and USA.

The Kung Pao chicken was good but did lack a bit of "kick" and once again the sauce was made with beef stock vs. chicken stock. Our noodle dish was interesting. There was a choice beef, pork, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables with the fried noodles. We chose pork and the waiter asked us again, pork or beef? We said pork. We were served beef...go figure. We didn't complain and the noodles were good. Once again there was more than enough food. One dish would have been fine, excepted we wanted the variety. We took home the leftovers in a "to go" bag. The cost of the dinner was $103 pesos or $25.75 US$. This included the soup, entrees, one bottle of mineral water and cover charge of $3 pesos per person.

The service was good not great. There is only one waiter but the restaurant is small. The only down side was the wait for the first course of soup was a bit long, around 20 - 25 minutes. After that everything was fine.

If you are looking for an authentic Chinese restaurant, the Garden is not for you. If you are looking for a good change of pace with a Chinese style cuisine, i would definitely recomment the Garden. We left, full, happy and had food to go home with all for $25. How can you beat this. They also have a fairly active "take out" business.
