Sudamerika Hostel & Suites Centro

Awfully noisy street, didn't sleep a wink on the first night. Got a room in the back, everything was fine. If travelling with family, get rooms on the 3rd or 4th floors. Breakfast is coffee, milk, horribly artificial orange juice and medialunas. It does the job, though. Mattresses OK, wide variety of cable channels, excellent wifi connection. Two subway stations within a block away; a block away from Av 9 de Julio. The immediate surroundings of the hotel will give you a scary impression, but go up or down a couple of blocks and you'll see stores, good restaurants, charming spots. Staff is ok, helped me when I needed, but there's no phone in the rooms, so you have to go all the way down whenever you need anything.

Well, I love hostels. The atmosphere is amazing, you meet people from all over the world. This is no different in Sudamerika. You'll meet many Brazilians, British, Israeli, Chileans, Spanish, Peruvians, Americans...

Sudamerika have some strong points, starting with its location. It is in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires, close to the famous Obelico, the Casa Rosada and the National Congress. You have one subway (the "Subte" as they say) station. Even considering low taxi rides, you should really take the Subte. Apart from environmental concerns, a ticket costs a quarter dollar!

The hostel is inside one old neoclassical building - and you can see it is really old. The guys on the front desk are really nice, but a creppy woman who owns the cafeteria makes your life hell during breakfast (coffee, milk, butter, 2 medialunas). Anyway, there is a bakery down the corner.

There is free wi-fi connection, but it does not reach top floors - so, if you really need non-stop connection, try to take a room on the first floor. On the other hand, top floors are a little distant from smokers on the lobby. Usually there is noise until 2 a.m. and internal rooms are REALLY hot. The one I took had no AC, so it was almost traumatic. Private rooms have private bathrooms, but they are TINY.

It wasn't terrible staying in Sudamerka, especially considering its rates. But I'll choose other hostel the next time I go to Buenos Aires.

Room Tip: Las habitaciones de pisos mas altos son mas tranquilas. Hay con vista a la calle Hipólito Yrigoyen.
