“Babel in BA”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2013

Our 2nd trip to Argentina was started in BA Where else?
In San Telmo, a 10 minute walk from Plaza de Mayo along Defensa nestles Babel, a haven of friendliness. We were in BA Jan 06 and stayed in the touristy part of town near Galleria Pacifica, a shopping haven and overpriced reminder of the efforts BA has gone to to draw in Western tourism. This time, we got it right. Staying in a neighbourhood in BA is to have an insight into how a city breathes, lives, eats and laughs. San Telmo invites nothing, demands nothing and having done so delivers a vibe so unusual that one can easily imagine arriving on Monday morning and leaving 20 years later with a knowing smile and a quiet confidence that comes of knowing that life's meaning is to be found in time spent strolling, never running. In Babel this acknowledgement of the importance of getting the pace just right is profound. A welcome at the small reception is assured, a helping hand to the well appointed room is just a wee part of what they do, the old fashioned old key turns noisily in the lock and a large bed faces each door and promises that whatever BA has to offer, Babel has the remedy. Jose, Miguel, Samantha and all the staff take Javier's expert lead in making you feel like a guest in a friend's home. They pour a glass of wine in the way that a friend rewards a hard day's toils. There is craic to be had, a welcome that is familial, a seat at the small bar that is made just for you. When we left the hugs from staff weren't "part of the service"..It was the pain of leaving family. When Miguel posted on Facebook upon our return, it was the proof that we weren't just guests made to feel like family. We were family. Our evenings at the bar, in the gorgeous yard at the back, the knowing reach for a fine wine upon our return from a city stroll... IF you are staying in BA and want to have an intimate, boutique friendly experience, do NOT miss BABEL. 10/10

We booked Hotel Babel because we wanted to stay in San Telmo and thought the location of the hotel looked fantastic. We weren't disappointed - it is right in the middle of everything that you would want to see. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and went out of their way to look after us. In terms of the hotel itself - we had a superior room on the first floor which was large and clean but didn't have any windows and smelt a little damp. I think one of the rooms at the front with windows would have been a better bet. The lobby downstairs was small but sweet, doubling as a breakfast area in the morning. Breakfast was the same as we had in other hotels in Argentina - pretty basic but fine - nice coffee, toast, fruit, jams and eggs if you wanted.
Price wise - we paid about $76 which seemed perfect and good value for the price.
I would recommend the hotel, not as a luxury getaway but for somewhere central, clean, friendly staff and good value.

We stayed here for a total of 3 nights in March/April 2012 and whilst we enjoyed our stay it didn't live up to our expectations given the reviews. The front desk staff were very friendly and helpful, and made us feel very welcome. They offered some very good advice on restaurants, transport and milongas. The breakfast was good but the service was slow and erratic: dirty plates were left out on the limited number of tables for a long time, it took a while to get some fresh cutlery and the buffet wasn't replenished very often so the available food depended on how many people had breakfast before you. The rooms and bathrooms (we stayed in 2 different ones) were very nice but some of the fittings were pretty tired looking (as was some of the lobby). Overall it was pretty good but could've done with a refurb and more attention on the breakfast.

Can't say enough about the staff at the Hotel Babel! They go way beyond what would be considered the call of duty. Very kind, friendly, and helpful people.
We loved our stay here and loved San Telmo! Its the heart and soul of Buenos Aires' distinct character and vibe! Within walking distance of many good restaurants and shops as well as downtown.

We had told our tour operator, Imagine Latin America, that we preferred to spend our money on activities rather than accommodation, and a three star boutique hotel, in a central location, would be about right. So they booked us into Hotel Babel, which is strategically situated in the heart of San Telmo, and a short walk to multiple restaurants, a great tango show at Taconeando, and the Sunday market at Plaza Dorrego. La Boca is a five-minute taxi ride away and the downtown only 10 minutes. The rooms are basic but adequate, the breakfast buffet features cooked meals, and what the hotel lacks in sophisticated amenities, is more than made up for by the general funkiness and relaxed atmosphere. There is a roster of about seven young people manning the desk who are extremely helpful in organizing taxis, booking tango shows, and providing advice generally. The hotel has free wi-fi and a computer for guest use.

Making the 'Tango Pilgrimage' to Buenos Aires, my wife and I stayed here in August 2012. Our summer, Argentina's winter. BA was cold and wet, but we immediately felt at home in the Babel. It's a converted property in the atmospheric district of San Telmo, with a modern interior and contemporary art on the walls in the lobby. This is definitely a boutique hotel: the rooms are best described as compact, and part of the reception/lobby area doubles as a breakfast area, but size isn't everything, and what this really has going for it is the staff. Young, friendly, enthusiastic and professional, with English way better than my rudimentary Spanish. They really shone when I had my bag stolen, and couldn't have been more helpful. A big 'thank you' to Jose, Juan, Miguel and Samantha. San Telmo is full of character, with some lovely buildings and a great market which doesn't feel like it is just there for the tourists. Stop outside the hotel, and look at the pavement, where a plaque serves as a poignant reminder of Argentina's troubled recent past. I'd book the Babel again without hesitation.

Room Tip: It's a city hotel. The rooms nearest the street are going to get more traffic noise, but persona...

The staff here are the jewel in the crown. They are so friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much effort and their English is excellent.

We stayed in room 6 which was a pretty decent size with a lovely bathroom and a very comfortable bed! This room is off the back courtyard and we had no problem with noise.

Breakfast was simple fare but tasty - great waffles! Other reviews here complain of cold coffee - simple solution is to ask for a fresh pot and ours was brought right out.

Perfectly located for the Plaza Dorrego for the Sunday market.

All in all, if you're looking for a San Telmo place to stay, look no further. We had a few more days in BA at the end of our trip and wanted to check out the Palermo area. Within hours of arriving we regretted our decision and wished we'd gone back to Babel!
