“Funky hotel in the heart of BA”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is an extremely funky hotel in the heart of BA. The hotel is located in the arty end of town near the famous weekend markets. Service is amazing with Miguel and the team looking after your every need. Little touches such as the list of daily local events made our stay in BA really memorable. Will definitely stay here again when we are next in BA.

We stayed at the hotel Babel for three nights in late August as part of a tour arranged for us by Imagine South America Travel. The hotel is unique in the fact that you do not feel you are staying in a hotel, but in a family home. Although the rooms are small, they are full of character and very comfortable. The hotel staff are friendly and make you feel welcome. Breakfast was relaxed and tasty. If ever we visit Buenos Aires again this will be our first choice. Highly recommended.

We've stayed a couple of nights in Hotel Babel, right in the centre of the San Telmo area in Buenos Aires. Reception is very friendly, breakfast very tasty. The hotel has only a few rooms, adding to the cosy atmosphere. Minor disadvantage: no sitting / relaxing area in the room. Only a small desk chair.

We had been traveling in Argentina and Chile for a month and this was our last hotel in Argentina, whilst it was in a more bohemian area of Buenos Aires we were a little disappointed, it was quite expensive compared to the other places we had stayed but the standard was not as good, the room was very small the linen old and the towels frayed and very thin. The staff were very pleasant the breakfast uninspiring. It is the only hotel that I would not go back to.

I'd booked Hotel Babel in advance of our trip to Argentina this July. Two days before we were to arrive we received notice that my husband's grandmother was being moved to hospice care and did not have long to live. The day before we were to arrive at Hotel Babel we canceled our reservation. They charged us one night penalty for the last minute cancellation. Fair enough.
We did eventually make it to Hotel Babel and it is a delightful hotel in a great location. The staff were attentive and helpful. The art on the walls is unique and interesting. The rooms are lovely, though for some reason the shower floor in our room sloped away from the drain leaving a pool of water sitting after every shower. Breakfast was basic, but included.
We enjoyed it so much we extended our stay by a couple of days. It is much better to book online through one of the consolidated sites like Kayak or Agoda than to book through the home site or through reception. When we were extending our stay reception quoted us a price thirty USD higher than what I found online.
It was all very pleasant until we got the bill. We were charged for the nights during which we stayed. We were also charged in full for one night due to the canceled reservation. PLUS we were charged an extra 10% for every night of the canceled reservation.
Personally, while I had a pleasant experience at the hotel I thought the 120% penalty a bit excessive. On our return to Buenos Arires we chose to stay at the Tango Lodge in Palermo. It was delightful in every way and included free Tango lessons given by the amazing Laura Rajneri.

Room Tip: If you are there for the monthly artist reception do try to attend. It's great fun!

This rather quirky small hotel made us feel welcome from the minute we were greeted in reception when we were offered mugs of freshly brewed coffee. The hotel is run on an almost casual, easy going basis by staff dressed very informally. The service was personal and caring. I was feeling unwell so we didn’t want to go out for a meal. The owner offered to bring in a takeaway for us since the local restaurants were closed (it being a Monday evening) but since I could cope with a meal they made us sandwiches and drinks instead. The decoration of the hotel was unusual – a sort of colonial meets the 1970’s and this was enhanced by an exhibition of modern art where the paintings were distributed throughout the hotel. The bedroom was quiet and comfortable and again rather unusual in its décor. The breakfast was adequate by Southern American standards – they tend not to eat much early in the morning saving their appetites for an enormous lunch.

I recently stayed at Hotel Babel for 10 days while visiting Buenos Aires on business. It is a small, bit counterculture but pleasant 'boutique' hotel -- 8 rooms in an old hacienda of the San Telmo district. Six rooms open onto a central, open courtyard, open to the weather, which was, unfortunately, mostly rainy and chilly during my stay. The other two rooms are "inside" over the lobby area and with windows fronting on the street. My room (on the courtyard) was spacious and comfortable, but a bit minimalist (e.g., no comfortable chair in which to sit, other than the desk chair). Bed was very comfortable. Shower spacious, hot and strong. Breakfasts quite good, esp. the strong coffee. This is not the hotel if you expect the better posher accommodations of bigger Western hotels, but good value, and a fun place to stay if you are not conservative mainstream culture. And it is far away by foot from the trendy Palermo and Recoleta districts (but there are taxis, buses and, when it is not on strike as it was during my stay, the Subte metro. The young, 'hip,' multilingual staff was GREAT -- very helpful in all respects, making the non-business aspects of my stay very pleasant and I am very grateful to them. They even arranged for shuttle service to meet me at the airport and accommodated me to relax with coffee and a snack for a few hours until my room was ready (my flight from US arrived in early morning). Its location is very convenient to restaurants of San Telmo and Puerto Madera, the Ecological Reserve ( a hopping place on Sundays) as well as the Autonomous Catholic University conference facility. And a great location to savor the Sunday street market of La Defensa. All in all a good place to stay and I would return.

Room Tip: The two front rooms can be noisy with street traffic (or so I heard from occupants). The other rooms...
