My friend and I went for dinner here last night, hearing some great reviews and some historical descriptions, we were eager to check it out. The food was good, the drinks were good, and the service was ok. Until the bill came.
Our server offered us bread and cheese and what appeared to be artichoke hearts, and we said yes, seeing as every other restaurant we had been to, the charge for bread was around 100 pesos.
They charged us 800 pesos for this. A small portion of bread, cheese, and artichoke. 19 US dollars. My tenderloin steak with mushrooms was 530 pesos to put it into perspective.
Its one thing to up-sell your product, but its another thing entirely to try and scam your customers into buying appetizers worth 10$ more then your filet.
So even though the food was decent and the beers were too, I encourage all travellers to stay away from businesses like this due to the udder lack of care for the customers, and to not get entirely ripped off.

In San Telmo we took a couple of wrong turnings before we found Bar El Federal, but it was so good when we did.
A lovely waiter explained the menu and we showed him the newspaper article that had prompted our visit. He was really pleased by this and took it to show the rest of the staff. We enjoyed a great lunch of paradas, bread, salad, tortilla, washed down with a cider Clericot. And it rained outside. Of course there was too much food, so we brought a doggy bag back to our hotel (which we enjoyed later with a glass of wine). I had chocolate mousse for dessert and we both had coffee and a complimentary limoncello shot.
Not too expensive but well worth it for the atmosphere and experience. Good clean toilets too.

My gf and I stopped in for a cocktail after visiting the market. Really a very cool old school spot. The bartender called over a colleague to assist who spoke English when he realizes how poor our Spanish was. LOL. Definitely worth popping in for a bev

Entering this café is like entering a live museum. This is apparently the oldest café in Buenos Aires. And it's beautiful. The furniture, the floors has been there for more than hundred years. The friendly waiter gave us a tour of the place and a little bit of the history.

There are many cafés in Buenos Aires that look like they haven't changed since they opened decades ago. This tells us something about the café culture in this city that isn't something new, hip or trendy. It's something that is part of the city. always has been and always will (I hope).
