“Paradise in the middle of nowhere!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2012

My wife and I spent a week at this wonderful resort in October, 2011. Due to flying from Toronto (and only being able to fly non-stop due to a fear of flying), we landed in Phoenix and picked up our rental car for the drive south. The benefit to landing in Phoenix was that we had the chance to stop for lunch at Los Taquitos (as seen on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives). Fantastic lunch!!!
After an enjoyable drive south through the desert, we drove up the mountain to the resort and were greeted like visiting royalty. We were brought up to our room on the 4th floor overlooking Ignite (the restaurant on the patio), the pool and, in the evenings, the Native American flautist in the hills (not to be missed). Beautiful room, comfortable bed, HUGE bathroom.
We had booked a package with breakfast every day and a $100 per day resort credit. The breakfast package gave you the option of having the full buffet daily...great choices...something for everyone (my wife LOVED the chilequiles). The resort credit was put to very good use at the onsite spa. Wonderful atmosphere, attentive staff and, best of all, use of the spa pool area. Very relaxing and not crowded.
We were at the resort starting on Canadian Thanksgiving (Columbus Day) but, once Tuesday rolled around, we felt like we had the place to ourselves. I cannot say enough about this resort. A number of other reviewers have comments (negatively) about the remoteness of this location. That was our favourite part of the hotel. We were looking for relaxation and quiet and we found it.
My wife and I make it a "policy" to never go to the same place twice on vacation (too many places to see in the world). RC Dove Mountain may be the exception to the rule!!!!

We booked 3 nights at the Ritz to celebrate our anniversary (7/5-8). Big mistake. The resort was over-run with screaming kids the entire time. There is no adult pool area to escape. We rented a cabana, but they are next to the kids pool also. Loved ducking shuttlecocks from kids playing badminton (Not). Great staff, nice outside patio, nothing special. Disappointing for a Ritz.

Our fourth visit to the Ritz-Carlton, we always try and end our USA tours here, for rest and relaxation, and once again were not disappointed.

The pool area was almost empty during the week - we arrived on a Monday, although got a little busier by Friday. The service from all the staff is excellent, and we particularly enjoyed the sample margueritas which Richard brought round every day. We were of course tempted by them and shared a pitcher each afternoon.

The rooms are big, with a big bathroom, with both a walk in shower and a huge tub. Housekeeping was excellent, happy to return when it suited us. Evening turndown service with chocolates and extra bottles of water is a lovely touch.

The hotel is somewhat remote, about 10 minutes off Tangerine up into the foothills, but we were visiting for the 4th timeand are well aware of the hotel's location so have no problem with this.

Front desk staff all go out of their way to help, and even took me down into the inner sanctum of the hotel to the Shipping office to let me weigh my suitcase before our flight back to the UK!!

A wonderful hotel, very relaxing and you would be crazy not to stay here. Cant wait for our next trip.

Would definitely return! Hotel staff was the friendliest that I have encountered anywhere. The food was great, definitely try the buffalo tacos. We practically had the entire pool to ourselves. Onsite ranger was so informative, gave us a personalized tour of his facility.

My wife and I just finished a quick staycation at this property and had a great time.

We booked through the Ritz web site and got a great deal that included a resort credit. I only did the $50/day package and I'm now wishing I had done the $100 package. :)

The room was nicely decorated in a rustic fashion. Lots of wooden beams and such. Balcony was a little small, but had a table that was great for breakfast outside. Bathroom had a huge soaking tub and standard shower/toilet room setup. The bed was comfortable but not great, although this is a matter of personal preference so YMMV.

Room service prices were in line with most resorts, maybe slightly higher than a Hilton/Westin type place. Restaurants on site had good, but not great food, with the exception of Core. My meal there was fantastic. Ignite was good for a late evening snack with some drinks, sitting under the stars.

We were absolutely amazed at how peaceful and quiet it was. Certainly part of that was because we went during the down time of year since we just live up in Phoenix...but the other part is certainly that it is nestled back in a canyon on Dove Mountain. At night it was dark, quiet, and almost like the rest of Tucson doesn't even exist.

Service was a bit spotty, however. Some was great, some was substandard...which I think is unacceptable if you are at a resort bearing the Ritz Carlton name. For example we had room service for breakfast on both days of our stay. The first day the server walked in, we said we wanted to eat on the balcony, so he rolled the cart halfway into our room lifted the cover to show us there actually was food there, and then bolted. He didn't even take the plastic wrap off the top of the coffee pot. The second day, we ordered room service again and the server took the time to set the table outside for us, made an extra trip to the kitchen for some salsa and ensured that we had everything in good order before he left.

We also had an odd experience at the pool where they had a private party being set up a the upper deck. The lower deck was still open...we literally had to beg for a cocktail. Drinks by the pool is why we went to a resort...hard to believe they didn't find it important enough to keep some staff to take care of the lower deck.

I think they could also take a little better care of the grounds. The lower pool had a really disgusting black ring on the tile at the water line and looking down from our balcony there were several pieces of trash on the patio roof below us.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and this is the best of the Tucson resorts we've stayed in. Better than the Westin La Paloma, Loew's Ventana Canyon, and a nicer hotel than the Hilton El Conquistador (although the El Con's setting below Pusch Ridge is prettier IMO).

We will be back. My minor complaints that I've listed here are certainly not enough to keep us away by any means and I only list them in hopes that the managers will be reading this and do something about it. We've stayed at Four Seasons before and in my mind, Ritz Carlton is a name that should represent similar quality to FS...so they need to fix these little things to live up to that reputation.

Room Tip: Great summer deals if you can travel off season or during the week. Makes a great getaway for us Ph...

Thank heavens we weren't expecting to relax and were in the area on business. I adore children, but not their inattentive parents. While in the fine dining restaurant for dinner our 2nd night, we and everyone else (for 45 minutes) endured a young girl screaming. A staff member finally went to the hotel store and brought her a toy, which calmed her. After this event, we retired to the bar for meals, hoping it would be quieter. But no such luck. We were treated to the sight and sounds of a very young child removing his own diaper. Poor child, his parents were sitting beside him and just ignored him. Forget the pool, young "tweenage" girls were in full force at midnight. It was one huge, loud slumber party. Again, no parents to be seen.

The hotel staff was at a loss, as were most of the guests. Staff members mentioned that the hotel was running a "kids welcome" special. I did not see such a special online or I would have gone elsewhere. I would suggest asking about any unpublished specials when booking.

Design of property was poor, with every 2 rooms sharing an "entry foyer". Thus, you could hear every visitor enter and exit the room next door. Room service was particularly loud.

The property was very nice. Rooms and public areas were very clean. Hotel staff was helpful and friendly. Drinks in the bar were superb. Food was a bit hit and miss. Heavy on Southwestern cuisine and at times not well executed.
