Owner description: The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the location of a former ancient building - a Roman basilica. The history of the Cathedral goes back to the 12th century, when the city acquired its own diocese. Today's front combines Gothic (the lower part) and Renaissance styles (the upper part). The Cathedral keeps numerous treasures: the big altar painting "Madonna with Child on the Throne and Saints", painted by Vittore Carpaccio in 1516, the stone sarcophagus of Koper's patron saint, St. Nazarius from the 15th century, etc. Town tower in Tito square, once romanic forticication, became a bell tower in 15th / 17 th century. It houses one of the oldest bells in Slovenia, dating back to 1333. From the panoramic point (43 metres) you can see the nearby and distant surroundings of the city Koper.

“Calm and well cared-for”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

After the noise and bustle of the main square, it was lovely to go into the Cathedral. The painting behind the high altar is worth seeing. And do not hesitate to go up the Bell Tower (tickets from Tourist Office in the square), as you get wonderful views all over the town.

“A Lovely place to visit”
Reviewed August 17, 2013

Koper is clean, pretty and easy to walk around. We went up to the Koper Cathedral and Bell Tower, which was not too strenuous a walk, although the heat made it more challenging than it might have been. The climb up the steep street to get there was relieved by the interesting shops along the way. Once up at the top, there were pretty views all around and then back down to the beach. We did not bring along bathing clothes, but we did climb down the steps as far as we dared to get our legs wet.

“Lovely city centre”
Reviewed August 9, 2013 via mobile

An old city with Venetian influence. The city centre is nice with winding narrow streets and a nice square with the cathedral, bell tower and ancient buildings on its sides. However Piran is nicer although busier. For those tight on time I would recommend going to Piran instead. It's only a 15 minute drive from Koper.

“Beautiful with heritage”
Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

Direct access easy (via steps) from cruise docking point. Bell tower ( by self), guided tour of Praetorian palace and cathedral in English (11am start) for total 7 euros. Ice cream parlour on left side of palace had some of the nicest ice cream I had ever eaten(and I LOVE ice cream), and free wi-fi access. Heading down to open air market area there was a little ceramic shop selling clay decorations. The lady took time and care to wrap each individually with raffia, dried flowers and a ceramic disc of your choosing - absolutely stunning as gifts. A beautiful spotless city, where travelling alone I felt safe in small alleyways.

“Koper town”
Reviewed August 3, 2013

Lovely day spent in small medieval town centre. Picture Far Far Away from Shrek and you will get right image. Town square ,museum and sizeable bell tower for you to walk up. Quality small shops selling good shoes and jewellery etc. small town beach and lido all very nice. Some people on our cruise jumped on a local bus and went to a nice town called Piran about 15 minutes away where there were nice beaches and harbour. We spent our morning on a trip to Lippaza Stud where the famous white horses of Vienna are raised. Very serene we enjoyed it even though we are not horsey types.

All round nice small and prosperous place
