I can't remember where I read about this but it was on the way so we stopped and it was definitely worth viewing. There are a lot of castles in Portugal, this one was built in the 11th century and restored in the 15th. It's lovely and a beautiful setting.

The Castle itself is beautiful and the surrounding area just makes it perfect.
If you can, visit it in August when it takes place the Medieval Journey - http://www.viagemmedieval.com/index.php?lang=en - This event is one of the most must see events in Portugal.

This castle really beautiful, a real fortress from medieval times. It's spacious and kids will definatelly have good time here. In the main hall a movie is played about the history of the castle and panels display the different situations of the buidling during the centuries of existance.

The castle is build on a former sactuary (pagan) and some Roman remeains have also been found during excavations. In 9-12 century the most activity was going on and that is visible in the architecture. You can really imagine how it must have looked like back then. The chapel is from a later era, which is easily to detect.

Staff is really nice and helpful and there are lots of activities, like reenactement.
The movie is in English, but everything else seems to be in Portuguese, so it might be wise to get some info about this castle before you go (there is lots out there), to enjoy it even more
