“Great place to stay”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

Atmospheric, relaxed, friendly, good value - excellent all round. Good breakfast except the coffee. Well placed in the centre of Tomar just off the main square. Parking is possible in a street close by - the owner will show you.

Good character, friendly service and good value for your money. The hostel is located right in main Tomar with restaurants, shops and bars in walking distance. Parking is possible right accross the river (5 minutes by foot). I liked the honesty bar as well as the garden, the breakfast was nothing special and the coffee is indeed awful...but that is just Portugal I guess. Overall a recommendation, really enjoyed my stay!

We checked in here on Friday for a four day stay and even though the hotel was full and very busy we were immediately made welcome by the host. The room was spotless and although it was a tad on the small side the bed was large enough and ensuite bathroom a decent size. TV in room with plenty of sockets. There was a large salon complete with piano and large screen TVand enough comfy sofas and chairs to seat everyone staying there. Lots of interesting books and plenty of information leaflets were on hand. There were also a couple of balconies overlooking the main street. There is also a comfortable bar a sort of mini pub. WIFI available at no extra charge around the hotel. Breakfast was in a charming dining room and was well presented with a good selection. The staff were helpful and friendly and everything was kept very clean. The Hoel is in a very central position and just a few strides from he main square. Perfect place to stay and we shall certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: Rooms at the front were larger but street side so not as quiet as the ones at the back, On the secon...

Most of the other reviews are correct - by staying at the Residencial Uniao you get character, friendly service and an inexpensive room. The pluses: The staff were exceptionally helpful, the Uniao is located centrally (although parking can be difficult and you may need to park on the other side of the river), the monastery is a short distance away, the rooms are clean and cheap, there is plenty of hot water in the bathrooms. The negatives: the bathroom sizes vary - my shower was tiny so you had to be careful not to drop the soap as there was no room to bend over! the breakfast is a bit dull and the coffee is awful, on my second night some drunken youths partied then argued in the street below for over three hours. This wasn't the fault of the guest house but I imagine that in the summer the noises from the streets below can be intrusive. That said, I would stay again as single room was only Euros 30 and I liked the 'honesty' bar and central sitting room. When in Tomar do go to the Matchbox or Fosphorous Museum, it is really worth the time.

This is without a doubt the top atmospheric budget choice in Tomar, one of the most appealing small town in Central Portugal.

It is on the main street, a stone's throw from the charming Igreja (church) de Sao Joao Baptista and just a 10 minutes climb to Convento de Cristo (UN World Heritage), the monastery/castle of the Order of the Knights Templar that draws thousands of visitors to this town.

The basic but clean rooms are comfortable with antique furniture and fixtures throughout the guesthouse. The bed was comfortable with old-fashion bed covers that match the curtain. The expansive old-fashion parlour and the Nicely decorated breakfast room add to the charm.

Extremely friendly manager (owner?) Jorge will take care of your every needs and requests. He helped me to print my boarding pass despite repeated problems with the airline website. An extra heater was provided for the cold nights. I met him on the streets and asked for direction to a museum. Instead of telling me where to go, he took me there personally. Now, that's great service.

The breakfast spread was wonderful including the delicious Portugese pasteis de nata (egg custard tarts), croissants, cookies, cold-cuts, walnuts, cereals, yogurt, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, milk, juice... Yummy.

Free Wi-Fi available, although the signals are a bit weak in some rooms but work in the corridors and public areas.

It was a most enjoyable stay and I would highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Room 202 has good Wifi signals.

We stayed here for two nights during the recent stormy weather that gripped a large part of Portugal. We even experienced a power cut for a couple of hours one evening. The weather meant it was quite cold so until the central heating came on about 6pm it was quite cold. The hotel is very characterful - old furniture and books etc. The staff are so friendly and the breakfast, bar area and lounge area are lovely. Our bed was too small but apart from that its a fabulous place. No wi-fi though.

Room Tip: First floor rooms at the front have balconies looking out on the amazing historic cobbled street.

My husband, two daughters (2 and 7 years old) and I stayed there for 2 nights in January. The room would be large for a couple (even a couple with one kid), but was on the small side for the four of us.
The location is awesome.
The service was very good, very attentive to our needs.
The shower holder was broken, so it was somewhat difficult to shower.
Also the heating in the room wasn't working, so they provided us a portable heater.
Breakfast was ok, nothing special.
