“Awe-inspiring!”
Reviewed April 4, 2014

We visited this convent before in 2007, and again this spring with more family members. It was even more beautiful and amazing than I remembered it. Just a steep but relatively easy and short walk up from our pensao in old Tomar, the site afforded us a decent two-hours of exploration and discovery. It is large, with much to see and marvel at, from the manueline window to the cloistres galoistre. Free oranges were handed out and refreshed us as we went. Even our six year old son became engaged by the castle walls, the rooftop views, and the many gargoyles adorning the old structure.

“Amazing”
Reviewed March 25, 2014 via mobile

Did not plan to visit bit so glad that we did. We were in town on a Sunday and climbed aboard the tourist land train. It turned out that it was just going to the convent.
So we went in (it is free on Sundays).
For the next 2 hours we explored all over this amazing place. Simply the most interesting attraction in Portugal.

“Spectacular world class site”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

This is so obviously deserving of world heritage status, i haven't seen anything quite like this place anywhere else before. We took the train from Lisbon (reasonably priced and on time in both directions) and walked into town before climbing up the hill to the castle. The town itself feels culturally very different from the capital, and then the sense upon entering the castle walls is other-worldy. We were lucky enough to be there on a Sunday morning, when the site was free to enter and not too busy either. Leave plenty of time to stroll through the various rooms and floors of both castle and convent and then the grounds outside, including the castle wall walk.

“My favourite historic site in Portugal”
Reviewed December 31, 2013

This is a big hitting World Heritage site, no doubt about that. The Convent of the Order of Christ had an amazing blend of history, beauty and intrigue. Its the HQ of the Knights Templar, its pretty much complete, and in December of 2013 it was pretty much ours during our visit. Each wonder is followed in the next room or round the next corner by something more wonderful. Want to see the finest Manueline architecture? Its at Tomar. Want to see a medieval aqueduct? Its at Tomar. Want to see more about how the Knights Templar actually lived? Its at Tomar. Finally, want a decent Pastis a Natal? Its at Tomar!
