“Traveling to the past”
Reviewed June 24, 2013

We loved our visit to the Convento de Cristo. We went there in the summer. Walked through the gardens, all the interior rooms and there are lots of things to see! It's like you got back in time, right into the past. To end our visit we had a local dessert: "Fatias de Tomar" - divine!

“A must place to visit if you are in Tomar”
Reviewed June 19, 2013

You can drive up to this convent which is set within the Tomar castle, or if fit, you can walk up from the main square (Praca do Republica). You can walk round the walls of the ruined castle and in the garden for free and then pay about €6 to go inside - or it is free on Sunday mornings.
We take all our visitors here and all have been very impressed. The views alone are worth the climb! The "cells" remind you of the Cadfael books and the church in the centre is beautiful with wall paintings, statues, etc. Even children enjoy climbing up the winding staircase to the roof!
There are toilets inside the convent and a small cafe. Please do not go in wearing short-shorts and low cut tops.

“Gorgeous.”
Reviewed June 16, 2013

Definitely a combination of the most beautiful architecture, carvings and tile work in one unique building that we came across in Portugal. The convent is lovingly maintained and open to the public to roam and enjoy. It is a must see in Tomar.

“The most awe inspiring building I have ever been to.”
Reviewed June 6, 2013

This building is huge and complete. The architecture, carving and wall paintings are magnificent. It's well worth buying a guide book - I have read mine and all the leaflets so many times since we came home. There is just so much to see on all three levels and no-one is pushing you on or ropes stopping you from going round time and time again.
