“Delightful place, wonderful break”
Reviewed February 18, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

Five days break staying at Casa Carolas in Olhao visiting family - superb location and wonderful house.... spacious with lovely bedrooms and roof terrace. Quiet location but 5 minutes stroll from the fantastic sea, fish and veg markets and lots of lovely restaurants. Ideal for family, would go back in a heart beat!

“Hidden Gem”
Reviewed February 16, 2017 for a stay in February 2017

I was deeply annoyed to read previous reviews about the sanitary provision here. Those people need to get out more. Have they not encountered a community like this before where the infrastructure was never designed to cope with the volume of waste mankind generates in this day and age? They could have stayed anywhere else in the old quarter of Olhão and it would have been the same. This is not peculiar to Casa Carolas, or even Portugal. Why would someone advertise something that is a local norm? It says more about the type of people who wrote those reviews than it does about this accomodation.

I personally don't have an issue with this amenity quirk. Casa Carolas is a gem of a place hidden away off the main drag. It is spacious, clean (unless by clean you mean sterile) and comfortable. Yes, the beds are firm but IMHO the best beds are. I slept like a log every night.

It has pretty much everything you need for a self-catering break. A few things are missing but with constructive feedback I'm pretty certain these things will be provided in due course - if the previous reviewers had attempted to contact the property management they would have found them helpful and responsive.

This is one of the finest self-catering properties I've ever had the pleasure of staying. If you are squeamish like the previous reviewers then I'd stay away from Olhão's old quarter completely, never mind this beautiful house. If you are laid back and open-minded when traveling you will be hard pressed to find a more lovely place to stay.

“An ideal family holiday home, wonderfully located.”
Reviewed February 16, 2017 for a stay in January 2017

We are two thirds of the way through a months holiday in this traditional house in the heart of the old town It is perfect for accessing all the amenities of this charming area. It is clean, spacious and well equipped, and the beds are very comfortable.
The management have been very helpful and quick to respond to any queries and problems and have organised taxi transfers very efficiently
Two of our daughters and partners have visited separately for five days each, and have been delighted and impressed with the house and the town.
The roof terraces give extra space for family activities and lovely views of the lagoon and the town.

“Disappointed, grimey”
Reviewed October 4, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

We booked Casa do Carolas for one week in September through Mars Algarve after reading their advertisement. We thought the property was expensive but due to the description and location of the property we thought it was something special. After arriving at the house we soon discovered that the house was not as advertised. We were shocked to find a sign on the toilet wall informing us we had to dispose of all toilet paper in a bin and NOT down the toilet. It was embarrassing having to walk 150 mtrs through the town to the municipal bins near the market each time with a bag of soiled toilet paper.

The linen and towels were nice and clean but that is where the positives ended. The bathrooms were very dated with staining to both the bath and shower. The shower mat was covered in mould. The towel holder in the downstairs bathroom was a plant pot stand. The vanity unit in the main bathroom was falling apart and dirty. The bathroom mirror had lights missing & the bath was very stained.

The beds were very hard and the joints of the antique Portuguese bed were loose, and creaked each time you moved. The most comfortable of the beds were on the solarium. These were hand made loungers with foam mattresses. The pillows were very soiled with I assume sweat.

The roof kitchen consisted of a sink, washing machine, table & four chairs and an ironing board. No facilities for cooking, more of a laundry not a kitchen.

The solarium had four loungers which were all clean and relatively new. The patio set had been painted a number of times and the paint was flaking off and sticking to our clothes.

After our return I contacted Simon from Mars Algarve and asked him why the method of disposing the toilet paper was not included in the advertisement. He said “This would not be something we would put in our advert”. He went on to say “Would you prefer to have sewage coming up out of the sink or dump the paper in a bin” I asked why did he not fit macerators to the toilets. He said they do not have them in Portugal and hung up.

In the response to my sisters review Mars Algarve state that we were advised prior to arrival that we would need to use bins to dispose of any toilet paper. This is wrong. I can copy all the information we received from Mars Algarve and it never mentioned this issue and regarding the money grabbing comment. We are more than happy to pay whatever the costs are for a rental property we only expect the place to be as advertised and with not such a low standard of cleanliness.

Think twice before booking this property.

On a brighter note. Olhao it's self and the people were very nice with plenty of places to eat and drink. A charming old town

"I have been waiting for this review as it is very much a case of money grabbing. The guests stayed at the house for the duration of their holiday and never once contacted us during their stay to express any discomfort. We are a very responsive Company and when each guest is met they are told they are welcome to contact us at any time. If the guests were so unhappy why did they wait until they retuned home? It is quite clear from the advertising photos that this is an old property situated in the heart of the old town of Olhao. The pictures clearly depict the property. Also it is not possible to have macerators in Olhao, if it was the case then every establishment would have one and yet not one single property does. It is clearly explained before arrival that guests may be asked to use the bins provided for tissues in the information we send prior to arrival. We did not put the phone down on anybody but this was done to us and we tried to call back with no success so wrote an e mail. The guests also contacted Trip advisor but as their complaints were unfounded Trip Adviser backed us. Need I say more? We advertise this house in a number of other locations and it is subject to some wonderful reviews elsewhere."

“Very dirty but then told our standards were too high..!!”
Reviewed October 2, 2016 for a stay in September 2016

Four mature adults spent a week here. The photographs and the description were deceiving. My brother is posting the photographs so I won't repeat them but it was really awful. We paid £150 booking fee so expected the Managing Agent to ensure the house was in good, clean condition...it was far from that. On arrival a notice told us NOT TO PUT TOILET PAPER IN THE TOILET but to put it in a bin and take it to the street bins. This is totally unhygienic but the Managing Agent said this was NORMAL! The bath was badly stained, the shower mats were mouldy, the shower head was old and could not be adjusted for your height, the insides of the cupboards were extremely dirty laden with old items that needed discarding, the barbecue was embedded with grease and dirt and the wire brush we were expected to use had no 'teeth', the carpets were badly stained..the list is endless. When my brother complained to the agent he was told our standards were too high and we should have booked somewhere more modern..unbelievable! A 'shabby chic' look is one thing, SHABBY is another. We paid over £1000 for one weeks stay and while we didn't expect five star accommodation we did expect everything to be clean. We certainly didn't expect toilets that wouldn't flush the toilet paper away. There was only one other review and that family thought it was good but if you are like me and don't expect to find rusty and worn furniture, soiled carpets and a general appearance of a run down boarding house then please don't waste your money on this place as I'm sure you can find something much nicer for the money. We fully expected the agent to offer us a partial refund as we didn't feel comfortable at all in the house but they were having none of it. In fact when asked why they hadn't arranged for the owner to provide a macerator in the toilet to bring it someway up to standard or at least provide this information on their website they simply put the phone down on my brother!

A charming and beautifully restored traditional townhouse a few minutes walk from shops, markets and restaurants,
On arrival, we phoned Marco who met us at the property, showed us how everything worked and made sure we knew to contact him if we needed anything, then left us to enjoy our stay. An efficient, friendly and professional service. Obrigada, Marco.
The house itself has everything a family with teenagers could want. T.V. with lots of channels, fast Wi-Fi, two bathrooms and even their own separate sun terrace!
Already planning to return.
