We stayed at D'Tunjung from 9th - 15th August 2013.
I forget the room type we chose, but it was room 808, which is amazingly close to the sea and has a veranda I could've literally sat on for days just completely relaxed!
Upon arrival at reception we were informed that check-in is done in the room (on veranda) which is a nice touch. So, after our long journey we walked through reception and around to the rooms to be greeted by the most amazing views.
Beautiful gardens leading to a deck with sun lounges, leading to the sea, it definitely feels like paradise!
As for the room, most of the rooms are their own buildings, so there's very little noise from other rooms except occasionally for people walking by. Candidasa seems to be a place where most people retire for the night fairly early, so it's easy to get a good night's sleep.
The crashing of the waves at night can be quite loud (this could just be due to our room being closest to the sea), but I found that after a few minutes it's very relaxing.
The staff were amazing, despite only having 5 nights here it felt like we were leaving friends.
The restaurant was better than I expected after having read previous reviews, so it looks like the management definitely do care about continuously improving this place.
There was unfortunately no fish on the 2 days we chose to eat here (they rely on local fisherman), but the alternatives were tasty and very well presented.
Plus, one of the other days we got to see the hotel staff engage in buying what I think was a Mahi Mahi from a local fisherman who'd just moored up, right over the wall of the hotel, which was very interesting to watch :)
Quite often when sat/laid on the deck, local people walk by offering snorkelling and day trips. At first we likened this to other annoying touts and just said "no thanks". But after having booked a trek online, our guide ended up being one of these locals!
It turns out most are quite genuine, and just make a living on showing tourists around. For example, we took a boat trip (from one of the boats moored straight in front of the hotel) to "White Sandy Beach", which cost us around 30GBP (45US) for the whole day, which includes a 25min boat ride each way, and a driver who stays around until whenever you're ready to leave.
Back to the hotel, we really loved it and can't wait to come back someday. Even the initial shock of showering outside (still completely private) become a novelty.
While maybe not the height of luxury and opulence, D'Tunjung is definitely endearing and has tons of personality and charm, I'd go back tomorrow!
