“Briliant service, great spot to relax.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2011

Under new ownership since Dec 2010 the team under Wayan remain in place and are what makes this place special.
First rate care and attention in beautiful villa, enjoyed the food and Villa Gils represents great value for money.
Downsides? Set in tight little cluster of other villas not a problem when we stayed in June though. The coast here lost it's beach when the coral reef was mined and the resultant sea defences lack appeal.
Having a car is essential to explore East Bali and visit local attractions such as White Sands Beach and snorkeling at Blue Lagoon.

I really can't say how well we were looked after at the villa's, it was on another level.
We stayed at the Dua gills which were 3 separate Bales with a small pool in the middle of the 3. The room was very spacious with a large extremely comfortable bed downstairs and 2 large settees upstairs in the open air. The bathroom was part outdoors which I have never experienced before but is quite common in Bali which at first I couldn't get my head around but got used to it pretty quickly however may not be to everyones taste.
The grounds have a dining area where food can be ordered at reasonable prices and honestly some of the best I tasted in Bali, certainly the best chicken satay.
The staff there can't do enough for you, they will let you know where to go and where to avoid, e.g. we were going to go in to padang bai to arrange transport to Gili but as there's little else there Wayan phoned and sorted us reservations on the boat saving us the hassle and a wasted day on holiday which is "the going the extra mile" we experienced for the whole 5 nights we stayed, the team really were second to none.
I do however think that the dua gils have become a little confused in the way they have been built. If you wanted to just sit in the sun all day you'd be limited due to a lot of shade from the buildings/banana trees so bare that in mind if that's what you are going for.
Things to note:
The rooms don't have tv etc so make sure you pack some entertainment.
I would also recommend taking mosquito spray/coils as you are on the edge of forest/jungle
Take plenty of cash if you don't have transport as the nearest atm is a half hour drive but you can go as part of a tour day so you're not wasting time/money.

We have stayed for 10 days in Villa Gils and Rumah Kecil, with 6 adults and 3 little kids (between 1.5 to 4 years). What a total pleasure! I can't keep it short, I'm sorry. For our group we needed Villa Gils and Rumah Kecil together and that meant first to get used to the fact Rumah Kecil and Villa Gils are not direct neighbouring (with little children sleeping times this does matter), but after a day we found this worked out. Then we found out we had the friendliest, thinking-along, thinking-ahead service you can not imagine! The manager is one in a million, sharp, so friendly and to the point. Exceptional, and I have visited Bali a lot. Then she has about 10 people working for you in shifts around the clock! Just for you!! In all service beyond expectation. What a joy for us and for our children! Then, the pool of Villa Gils is excellent. The food is great (great taste and mix between local and non-local dishes), massages are great. I am forgetting things, but to top it of, I had asked to plan for a special surprise evening and, you can guess, it was arranged to details and with so much love, tears have been flowing of joy. It gives me a very warm feeling to know and see how this place is run and supports people from the village. Not cheap in absolute terms, but such a high return on so many fronts. Did I mention excellent service? This place lives and breathes love! THANK YOU!

We have recently returned from a wonderful stay at Villa Gils, the largest villa in this complex. Mendira is a lovely village on the coast about 2 km from Candidasa. If you do your research you will know that the beach in this area disappeared years ago after the coral reefs were harvested for lime and that concrete structures have been put in place to create some stability. However, the view from upstairs at Villa Gils is still lovely and if the wind picks up the garden is very sheltered. For us with 2 teenage boys, the accomodation was ideal- the main villa for my husband and I and separate bedrooms with bathrooms for the boys- everyone had plenty of space. The pool is huge and great for doing laps and all meals are served in the bale by the pool- just beautiful.

The staff at Villa Gils are fantastic- nothing is too much trouble. The manager Wayan is very knowledgeable and organsied some wonderful treks and snorkeling for us while our boys were doing a PADI dive course. My husband turned 50 during our stay and she organised a cake with candles and brought all the staff over to sing happy birthday. When our departure plans changed at the last minute we were able to use the neighbouring villa for a late check out without any hassle. The food at the little restaurant is lovely and the staff happily gave us a cooking lesson.

Villa Gils is ideally placed to explore central Bali and the north east coast. There are many things to see and do. Above all, the atmosphere and the service ensure that you leave feeling completely rested and rejuvenated.

We didn't actually stay at the villas, but stumbled upon them quite by accident one morning whilst staying in the village. We were nosey enough to pop our heads around the door and Amanda simply invited us in for a coffee with her. Amanda is a wealth of knowledge on Bali and was an absolute pleasure to talk to. We felt so at ease with her that we went back for our evening meal that night, which was a real pleasure. The experience was so relaxing and felt like you were having dinner at a friends house rather than in a restaurant. As a seasoned traveller, it was such a pleasure to happen upon such a place and its colourful, hospitable owner :-)

We stayed in Villa Gil with 4 adults and 4 children.
Very nice rooms and an excellent pool area. The staff were brilliant, particularly with the kids and a number of impromptu cooking lessons were enjoyed in the kitchen. The food was excellent, you can pretty much order anything and they will tell you if its possible. Being a smaller restaurant, let them know if you want specific fish/meat for certain meals as they do not keep a large range, preferring fresh to frozen.
Amanda is extremely helpful with extensive local knowledge, she tends to tell it like it is. She also arranged several local trips for us whilst we were there.
Location wise, its nice to be so close to where the locals live and let the kids interact with the local kids down at the beach. The trip into Candi Dasa is quite quick by bemo after a 5-10 minute walk up to the main road, the walk through the village is part of the charm of the place, no hawkers just the local families going about their business.
A nice beach just around the corner with a pontoon set about 100m out.
The massage treatments were quite popular with our group and the healer did a pretty good job with my nephew's foot.
Villa Gil was excellent both in size and price for our size group.

We have just returned from a whirlwind tour of Bali where we spent 3 days at Rumah Kecil (the Little House) at East Bali Villas, 2 days at Pan Pac, Tanah Lot and finished up with 2 very luxurious nights at the Alila villas in Uluwatu. Of these three, east bali villas was by far the least expensive however my husband and I agreed it was our favourite Bali experience out of the three.

Candidasa feels like an adventure. The villas are surrounded by an real balinese village and we sometimes felt like we were on a film set as we walked around exploring. You have the sense that this is the real Bali, chickens and piglets roam the streets, offerings to the gods decorate every small nook and cranny, the kids always seem to be smiling and playful and you feel completely safe and at ease. Around every corner is a new sensory experience.

The villas themselves are classy, luxurious and incredibly comfortable. They are simple in design but have everything you need to make you feel at home. We spent countless hours lounging in the beachfront bale taking in the ever changing view.

The staff of course are wonderful and will discreetly ensure you want for nothing and the food was as good as anything we had at the other resorts. We have decided to make this an annual event - otherwise leaving would have been too hard!.
