My Husband and I spent one week at the Royal Bali beach club in April (during the volcano crisis). We had a wonderful time at the hotel. It looks just as pretty as it's picture and because we had researched it's location, it was actually better than we expected.
We hired a jeep at the airport, but that is because my husband likes driving in crazy countries - not to everyone's taste. We did try to get the hotel to pick us up, but as this was booked through Diamond Resorts (holiday club, points donated as a present to us), we could not contact them directly and no reply was ever received. However we enjoyed the jeep and it gave us the freedom to go out everyday and explore if we wanted to - and a weeks hire was the same cost as a return airport transfer.
The staff at the hotel were all lovely - if a little over staffed due to the lack of customers from the flight issues. This in turn though meant we got to experience a slightly empty hotel - all the more room in the pool for us!
The local town of Candidasa (the hotel is in a nearby village) is about a 8 minute drive away. If you did not have your own transport then the hotel can organise lifts for you.
There are heaps of trips that they provide all over the island. As we were on a purely relaxing holiday and had our own transport, we did not do any of their trips, so it would be unfair to comment, but they did seem quite expensive, but it is a hotel.
The food at the hotel whilst excellent, is expensive when compared to the other restaurants in town. But you are paying for convenience.
Some restaurants will come and collect you from the hotel, which is what we took advantage of several times.
We ate at the Le 48 Zen and Happy Rezort (French inspired, and totally cool place - though the waiters wearing white gloves was a bit Michael Jackson for us!). Vincents was fanatastic, spent the whole night there having cocktails then dinner whilst listening to great music. Toke had surprisingly great Indian food and very friendly staff. We also ate at the Lotus seaview restaurant and tried the Bebuk Duck.
As well, we sampled the local small restaurants who were all very friendly.
Overall we had a great stay, very relaxing, beautiful pool, friendly staff and the perfect place to do nothing for a week.
