“not like it”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 29, 2012

We arrived at the hotel on July, pre-negotiate, that we have two small children and we need a room with facilities for children. They were given a room with stone floors are absolutely everywhere, it's terrible. Also, the bathroom was a stone floor and the water flows when you wash. After we took a shower, we have a pool of standing water and the smell was terrible until the morning. And this is 5 star? They do not even provide slippers when we went to the pool. Kitchen just a wonderful, everything else is just barely pulls in 3 stars, but no more. Also, they said that Majeka House is child friendly hotel, BUT when the children began to play, they were told that we must be quiet, because they DISTURB people at the spa. Our children do not play loud, and just play like normal kids. I'm not very happy. This is the first time in our experience. Prices are pulling for all five stars, but the service is a stretch only 3 stars. All that is said about the 5 stars - it's interior and kitchen can be, but no more.

Room Tip: not 5 star - only 3 star!!!!!!

Dear Yulia A,
Thank you for your response to your stay with us at Majeka House.
I do however feel that I need to respond.
I am sorry you did not like our rooms (our Pool Suites) and felt the floors were too cold for your children. These suites are in fact approximately 70% terra cotta tiles and 30% wood. The terra cotta tiles do also have persian carpets on them and the wooden section a more modern rug.
We do also have air conditioners in all rooms that can adequately heat the room.
We are sorry that there was a water spillage in the bathroom which would have been cleaned up had we been allowed to come into the room to do turndown. Unfortunately the room attendant's was not allowed in to do her duties which would have gone a long way in fixing the water problem as well as the slippers.
The indoor heated pool is in the spa area. Unfortunately if a guest in the spa does request a lowering of noise we will always try and meet their needs. We do not feel this is an unreasonable request. Yes, we are a child friendly hotel but this does not mean that we can ignore the adult guests needs.
We do appreciate your kind comments on the interior and our food. Things we are very proud of.

It was my third time at Majeka and I will go back again. The food is excellent. The menu descriptions a bit too quirky to my taste. Was a bit nervous when ordering but the result was just great. Rooms are spacious. Great shower. Breakfast is a real meal experience.
Drinks in front of the fire. (it was cold out in Stellenbosch...)
All Majeka personnel are friendly and attentive.

Room Tip: Pool suite is gorgeous

What a special experience. This place offered far more than I expected, and I have no doubt in my mind that I will be back soon.

I was fortunate enough to do the really great Winter Special that they are currently running. It consisted of an overnight stay, impeccable dinner, breakfast and spa treatment.

Walking into the reception area was breathtaking-the decor is phenomenal and the effort put into detail is incredible. Once led to our room, we were quite adamant that there was no need to leave it. Ever. The decor is just beautiful and very opulent, there is a Lavazza coffee machine as well as an extensive dvd collection. No expense was spared-and I truly feel that Majeka House epitomizes luxury.

We went down to Makaron Restaurant for a 5-star meal, including macarons and very good wine. Needless to say, we slept very well that night!

Breakfast was wonderful, as was the spa treatment.

Thank you for such a lovely stay.

As soon as you walk through the doors you can tell why, this hotel is a 5 star property!

I loved the decor throughout the hotel. The quirky feel made it feel fun and the luxury items just added that extra luxurious touch.

We received a friendly greeting upon arrival, which included a mini tour of the guest areas. The garden areas are neat and the rose bushes were lovely.

All the leisure facilities (spa, sauna, indoor heated pool & steam room) is such a treat. The pool towels in a canvas holder and crocs are very handy and a unique touch.

Our room was elegantly decorated & was quite spacious. It had all the luxury amenities we needed. We enjoyed the lavazza coffee machine.

We did have a little incident, where one of the water bottles burst overnight in the fridge. But as soon as we called in the morning, someone came to attend to it within 5 minutes.

Breakfast the next morning was yummy! There was plenty to choose from the buffet selection and a hot menu with delicious dishes. The buffet spread was laid out so beautifully and I appreciated the attention to detail that was put in. All those little jars, were so cute !

we will def return one day

We stayed in the pool suite and it was lovely. The room is decorated very tastefully. The service was impeccable, efficient and friendly. The dining experience at Makaron was very nice but the breakfast really wins it all!!!
We will definitely consider going back to Majeka House for a special occasion or may be just when we feel like a bit of pampering.

First hand ...this is an an immaculate property, the decor, food, service all excellent!!!! a few hiccups when we checked in, an opened wine bottle in the fridge, no ashtray once confirmed there was one on the porch and a broken TV but the negatives do not come close to the properties positives. All the issues mentioned above were handled swiftly and in the most professional manner by Jennifer ..she offered magnificent service to ensure that we were comfortable. The decor is absoloutely fantastic along with the taste explosion in the restaurant. One night is not enough to explore what the his hotel has to offer ...Definitely a memorable experience and would love to return very very soon.

We recently had the opportunity to visit Majeka House and were not disappointed. In fact, you do not 'visit' Majeka House, you experience it - and what an exceptional experience.

The rooms are immaculate and careful attention has been given throughout. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the dining experience was at a level that would rival some of the finest hotels in the world. Our dinner at Makaron (restaurant within Majeka House) can best be described as an adventure on a plate, as each element of our dishes was unique and a true sensory experience.

As a seasoned traveller, I can honestly say that Majeka House is one of the finest hotels I have ever visited. You will not be disappointed!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Owner-managed and blissfully private, Majeka House is an ideal base from which to explore the historical town of Stellenbosch with its interesting shops, galleries, museums, and alfresco café culture. Numerous famous vineyards and award-winning restaurants, dotted along the Stellenbosch wine route, are within striking distance. This prime location combines with luxurious accommodation, thoughtful service, a sophisticated bar and restaurant, a professionally run spa and spacious grounds to create what is undoubtedly one of the most stylish boltholes in the Cape Winelands. After extensive renovations and a designer makeover in 2011, Majeka House now boasts 22 rooms and sophisticated yet witty interiors. There are two new luxury mountain suites above the main hotel with large mountain-view balconies, and three new junior garden suites overlooking a shared, exclusive-use pool area. And, while the entire hotel is ‘parent friendly’, there’s also a fully self- contained villa – set apart from the main hotel and with a large private pool and garden – that is designed specifically with families in mind. The new suites were all conceptualised and decorated by interior design wunderkind Etienne Hanekom, who is also responsible for the award-winning interiors of Makaron Restaurant, the lobby and bar. They capture a sense of drama with boldcolours, rich textures and eye-catching custom-designed wallpapers but are also comfortable, inviting spaces for complete rest and relaxation. All contain thoughtful extras, such as comfy Crocs instead of hotel slippers, a Lavazza espresso machine, Wi-Fi internet and a DVD player with a wide choice of movies. The spacious and cleverly designed en suite bathrooms are fragrant with local toiletries made with indigenous plant extracts. In Makaron Restaurant, a stylish, contemporary interior using a clever mix of repurposed and recycled furniture complemented by modern statement pieces has been created. The result is a visually stimulating space that offers extreme comfort and encourages complete immersion in the dining experience. The overall effect is an understated feeling of luxury.Airy and light, the restaurant overlooks lush gardens and leads onto a sheltered terrace for alfresco dining. It is in this stimulating setting that resident chef Tanja Kruger presents her menu of fresh, modern cuisine grounded in the French classics. ... more   less
