We went to Terroir for dinner and it was a first time for me and two friends. We were able to find a table without a reservation on a rather busy Saturday eveining, which was a great relief. The ambiance is good and I think to enjoy sundowners on the terrace in the day time or before sunset, would emphasize the beauty of the setting in the De Zalze estate.
The menu was somewhat confusing- a winter special at set price , but only some of the itiems on the menu qualified for the special, which was unfortunate.
I chose the kingklip main course at a whopping R185 - it was well presented, but no sides and the fish was rather bland and I'm not sure that it was thoroughly cooked.
We wanted to order dessert, but was told that dessert was not available, until much later in the evening. It was a blow, to say the least. We chose to settle the bill and left, as one of the members in our party, was suffering of back ache and could not sit much longer.
I am still curious to know what the dessert would be like.

Food and wine exceptional. You can dress up or down and feel relaxed. Service was fantastic. We were never forgotten. And from the starters to desserts every mouthful was delicious. The prawn risotto starter is mouth watering. The hake in orange jus and sirloin excellent. Desserts yummy. A truly wonderful dining experience.

Second visit to Terroir was a huge disappointment, due to "chef's special" steak that was very chewy and tough, even though onlu cooked to medium. The price was more than twice what I would have expected one could charge for such poor quality and was altogether a complete failure. Charging for the image of quality seems to be OK at this restaurant, despite bad food!

There is little doubt that this restaurant has a lovely atmosphere in the evenings. Menu from a chalk board always has a selection to cater for probably nearly every taste. The restaurant has winter specials that, unfortunately, do not change (according to our wait person), which is a pity as it is a lovely, cozy place to have dinner, especially near the fire. The winter menu includes a glass of wine - ours was served more in tasting size. Terrific medium rare sirloin - one of the best sirloins that we have had for a long time - well prepared and cooked. Reminded me of something similar in Paris many years ago!

Had the pleasure of dining twice at Terroir this month and both occasions were memorable. A lunch on the terrace under the trees 'al fresco' is a really special treat. The really fine food was accompanied by great affordable quality wines from the Kleine Zalze estate. They also run a 'Winter special' offering a 2 course @ R225 and a three course @ R255....not on Sundays :( Make the effort its really worth it!
