The Stables Lodge
Ranked #56 of 115 Stellenbosch B&B and Inns
Reviewed November 24, 2013

My wife and I looked for a quiet, unpretentious lodging for a night for our last night of a 10 day trip in South Africa. We found on the Stables Lodge on the internet and it seemed just the place for us. Easy to find in the leafy suburbs of Stellenbosch, it turned out to be exactly the right choice. The owners are delightful, and Ilaria's background as a travel agent was most useful as she sorted out a minor problem with printing our flight boarding pass. The B & B itself is very homely, and the facilities in our rooms (bedroom, kitchen and bathroom) matched our needs perfectly. Although only there 1 night we felt perfectly at home, and if we ever have the good fortune to return to SA we would return to this B&B if at all possible. It is also ideally sited for the airport.

My husband and I came to Stellenbosch to attend a wedding and to explore all the wonderful things that Stellenbosch has to offer. We were heartily welcomed by the owners of the guesthouse. They are so warm and welcoming and makes one feel at "home" even when you are away from your own home. Friendly staff, excellent accommodation and overall great value made this stay worthwhile and exceptional! A MUST for all who need a home away from home in Stellenbosch!

Stables lodge is not too far from the city centre. we booked 2 rooms for 3 night stay during our visit to Stellenbosch. . The lodge is very secure, car parking is safe. The rooms we had were clean and neat c/w a little pantry where we can make our little meal since there is a spar mini mart just a short walk from the lodge. The breakfast at the dining room was great. Lovely ambiance with a small fire place. everything were freshly made and self help over a island table in the kitchen. The lodge owners were not in town when we arrived but their Italian friend help us with our need during our stay. The centre of the estate has a small pool. overall, the lodge is a ideal place for family especially if you have little children.

Decent place with all the usual trappings I'd come to expect in South Africa - spotless clean, manicured grounds, safe parking...
Location was good for us - a short drive from downtown and on the beautiful road to Jonkershoek nature reserve, which is great for hiking and biking.
But some comforts were missing - host Fabio was courteous enough but lacked the warmth, informativeness and enthusiasm we came to love elsewhere. Breakfast was slightly on the sparse side and the kitchen staff rejected any and all of our requests for variation of the breakfast fare. At least in other places, the hosts do try. So a slightly more "European" approach to the business, which is a pity.
On the whole a good enough place, but I'm sure one can do better somewhere else.

I stayed with two friends 1 night in January.
The cottages are ok but lack one important thing. normal beds.

There is one queensize bed in the living which is ok. The second (kids)room has one self man bunk bed. Both those beds are really small (only for kids). The construction is horrible, meaning that one moves, the structure almost collapses. This is the reason We placed the matras of the top one in the living room on the floor.

Second, the location is very far out of the center of Stellenbosch. Walking is 35 minutes. In the centre however are plenty of accomodations which are not online.

As the title states, the welcome was good and friendly. Breakfast was also ok.

In conclusion, it is pretty expensive compared to other establishments and only suited if you have a car and are by yourself or if you're a couple.

The location of the guest house is in a lovely pretty area of Stellenbosch. We were slightly surprised with the room layout, as it was very strange with the shower, basins bath and toilet all being separated. The room itself was 'OK', quite large - we had another bedroom which we didn't need as only travelling as 2). The pool area is nice but the pool water needed maintenance after some heavy rain before we arrived. The breakfast was a a slight disappointment, it was 100% self service for tea and coffee and even toast etc. There were 2 ladies there to cook hot food but we didn't have any so I cannot comment.
The hosts we met, Fabio and Fredrico were very helpful and friendly, they recommended great vineyards to visit and we were not disappointed. Stellenbosch is a lovely town and we enjoyed the time spend there immensely.
