“not as expected”
Reviewed March 16, 2011

Not that we were disappointed with the views, the breakfast and the location, but compared to all the other B&B's we stayed in, this was the most unpersonal stay we had. As described in another review, we were surprised to find the sign on the door that said to make a call for the front door to be opened. We had to carry our heavy luggage up the stairs in to our very tiny room ourselves. We did get a few good tips on restaurants of the owner and liked the honesty bar principle.

We found the visit a tad disappointing/disheartening overall, which was a shame; our general thoughts were:
1. We had to make an international call to get the owner to open the front door, as a sign said the bell was not working.
2. Maybe she was having a bad day, but we felt the owners attitude to be less than welcoming (we heard she was trying to sell up).
3. The (Elephant) room looked tired, and in need of redecoration.
4. The pool was largely occupied by friends of the owner for much of the Sunday afternoon, as well as pool cleaning equipment.
On the positive side, the breakfast was very good, as were the views.

Don't get me wrong, Stellenbosch is a great town but the views, comfort, and charm of the Allegria Guesthouse are magnificent. The town of Stellenbosch is a short 5-10 minute drive and all the winerys and restaurants in the area are between 5-20 minutes away. The owners are friendly, helpful, and hospitable... the rooms are spacious and comfortable... & the breakfast is delicious. If you are visiting the SA Winelands, stay here and I promise you will not be disappointed.

the internet presentation is very professional; compared to this presentation reality can´t match;
one problem is, that parts of the guest house seem to need more maintenance and observation: inoperative bulbs in the room, flaked off colours on the deckchairs, one deckchair had a broken covering, the lawn is rather dry, some doors are jammed;
but the bigger problem is, that guests seem not to be welcome all time; the conversation sometimes gets harsh from the side of annemarie, when asked for support for reservation of a restaurant or details of an event and so on; you may be answered to help yourself and use your phone;

Location:
10 minute drive from Stellenbosch town. You will need a car to get around here, but if you have a car, you will not have any problems. The view from the garden and pool is fantastic. It is located close to the vineyards and is on the Cape Town side of Stellenbosch. One thing to note. We had picked up the impression that we would be staying on a vineyard, with vines, and perhaps even wine tastings. While a vineyard has been planted, it is only new, and so there are no vines to view and definitely no tastings.
Room:
We were on honeymoon, so we booked a superior room. The room is a great size, with a luxurious double rain shower. The open-plan bathroom did not bother us (note WC is in a seperate room, but shower, bath and WHBs are open plan with the room). It was quite a novelty, and in any case is relatively common in SA. The room has double doors leading out to the pool and patio. It is completely seperated from the rest of the house, so you have total privacy. The only thing that i would note it is that from the photographs on their website, we had the impression, that the room had a very sharp finish, as you might expect in a nice hotel. In contrast, it has quite a rugged finish, concrete floor, slightly uneven plaster etc. It is not sloppy, just a particular kind of rugged look, but better to know what to expect.
Breakfast
Quite good. Nice freshly baked bread. However the coffee tended to be lukewarm, except when we asked for a fresh pot to be brewed. Also, there never seemed to be enough milk. Every day we received a small jug of milk, and every day we had to ask for more. It is a small matter, but considering there were only about 5 guests staying at the time, i would have expected to receive a larger jug the second or third or fourth morning.
Facilities
Internet worked pretty well. The pool is nice (alhough it is not heated, and was too cold to use in September). TV and Air con in the room worked well.
Staff:
Mixed. Jan was very helfpul, but we found that we didn't quite click with annmarie. It may have just been cultural differences, but we didn't feel particularly welcome. This is particularly noticeable in comparison to other South African establishments who really go out of their way to make you feel welcome.
Jan recommended a great restaurant for my wife's birthday (Ruste en Vrede - really really recommend this fantastic luxurious restaurant). It is considered expensive by Stellenbosch standards (~€100 for dinner for two with three courses and wine), but not overly so by Irish standards, and especially not considering that they gave us a free birthday cake for my wife and spoiled us throughout the meal. For the rest of our stay, Annmarie kept mentioning our visit to this restaurant, and how she could not afford to go there. It became a bit tiring after a while.

We reserved for one night a deluxe room and then for 4 nigthts the 2 best avaikable rooms. If we arrived the Managment was surpised, they lost aur reservation (we had a copy with us) howver we could stay in a minor roome and coud move next da in the reserved cathegori. The rooms a a bit to much used, it needs some investment to keep it up. The pahntasic lonng pool was dirty due to a lack of the pump. The beds in the luxury rooms are very tight during night it is loud due to the fact that the main street is very closed. The walls are thin and you will join the conversation of your neighbors if you want or not. The internet was when it was working very slow. Breakfest was good and the people try to to well but they ere a bit strange inany way.
There are better values araound Stellenbosch.

Zeef, Managing owners at Allegria Guesthouse, responded to this review, February 18, 2010
Dear Sir, Madam,

We were kind of surprised and disappointed to read the feedback of “tirol_traveller” on TripAdvisor and would like to add following comments:

- Indeed, we ‘lost’ the reservation for the first night; the other nights were in the system as booked. Though the Comfort rooms are a bit smaller compared to the DeLuxe rooms, the beds and the finishing are of the same quality. Yet obviously not the rooms the party booked; a very rare mistake, for which we profoundly apologized.
- Our pool is normally crystal clear, but the pump broke and the repair company let us down completely. We worked over the weekend to try and repair it, but indeed, it took too long. A situation that was quite embarrassing and a learning moment for the future (always have a spare pump in stock).
- In all our rooms we have the same, high quality XL box spring beds. We are not sure what ‘very tight’ means, but this seems to be a personal matter.
- The walls are not thin, but rather thick (approx. 27 cm) and moreover, the Superior rooms have no adjoining rooms. “Joining a conversation” is something we therefore can’t explain.
- To put “very close(d)” into perspective: the main street is approx. 200 meters from the guesthouse – as the crow flies.
- We were just in the process of testing a 2 mbps wireless broadband internet connection at that time. Our internet facility has a 98% up-time and – certainly for African standards – can hardly be described as ‘very slow’.

Yes, we made a mistake. We apologized extensively and tried to make up for this in any possible way. It is very unfortunate to learn that apparently we didn’t succeed here, and are even considered to be ‘a bit strange’.

Kind regards,
Annemarie & Jan

We stayed at Allegria for three nights this January, it was the second time we had stayed there and it was as memorable and magical as we had remembered it. Anne Marie and Jan who run Allegria are so helpful and in many ways you leave feeling like you have been staying with old friends. The rooms are lovely and the swimming pool is one of the largest and well kept ones we have found in South Africa, it is long enough to do proper lengths. I would definitely reccomend Allegria to anyone wanting a very peaceful boutique style bed and breakfast, in an amazing setting.
