Owner description: The urban sprawl of Stellenbosch comes to an abrupt halt, in its south-western suburb of Onderpapegaai, when you enter the gates of Middelvlei. Suddenly, before you lies a beautiful vineyard-strewn amphitheatre overlooking the Bottelary Hills and the upper reaches of Devon Valley. This is the home of the Momberg family, who have been wine farmers since 1919.Join in the Boerebraai fun at Middelvlei where our resident braai expert will prepare your chops, boerewors and chicken sosaties to perfection. As if the appetising aromas of roosterkoek and braaibroodjies are not enough, Ben's homemade pâté and Ouma Annie's pumpkin fritters have placed the Middelvlei Braai in a league of its own.

Stumbled across Middelvlei whilst passing by. We've enjoyed some of their wines in the past, so decided to pop in on a whim. As soon as we were out of our vehicle, we were welcomed by the friendly hounds that abide there. The wines on offer were of a good quality, and extremely keenly priced too. There's also a small menagerie to one side - ideal if you have kids in tow. Will re-visit.

Even though we live close by in Cape Town, we decided to overnight in Stellenbosch. The self-catering accommodation on Middelvlei is comfortable and spotlessly clean. It's not far to the attractions that Stellenbosch has to offer but still isolated enough to feel as if one is far from the madness of the city. It was lovely having the owners dogs visiting and being able to have a fire (with ample wood available) in the cottage. The "boerebraai" was excellent. Even though there was a 21st luncheon happening at the venue, there was enough space for everyone. The presentation of the food and the packaging was very appealing.

We went with 3 young, energetic boys and the setting was great. There was space to play, animals to pet and even balls and scooters! The relaxed atmosphere meant that the kids could be themselves without disturbing anyone.

Just like home - an down to earth braai, under the autumn sun. Pleasant lunch, with pleasing wines, in this child-friendly envionrment. Highly recommended.

We visited Middelvlei Wine Estae with a group of Australian visitors in the pouring rain and had a wonderful time. There was a very welcome fire being stoked up to take the chill away from the storm outside. We started with a winetasting conducting by the bubbling Jeanneret who took us through their lovely wines. While this was going on husband Ben was sweating over the coals preparing the most delicious snoek on the braai. This was accompanied with all the local trimmings like grape jam, a sweet potato bake to die for, toasted cheese and tomato sarmies and salad for the health conscience. Our hosts and all their dogs of various shapes and sizes made this a special lunch. If anybody is looking for authentic boere (farmer) hospitality this is the place. Children are welcome as there are lots of different farm animals and even a few wallabies, which confused our visitors. You must book.
