Owner description: The urban sprawl of Stellenbosch comes to an abrupt halt, in its south-western suburb of Onderpapegaai, when you enter the gates of Middelvlei. Suddenly, before you lies a beautiful vineyard-strewn amphitheatre overlooking the Bottelary Hills and the upper reaches of Devon Valley. This is the home of the Momberg family, who have been wine farmers since 1919.Join in the Boerebraai fun at Middelvlei where our resident braai expert will prepare your chops, boerewors and chicken sosaties to perfection. As if the appetising aromas of roosterkoek and braaibroodjies are not enough, Ben's homemade pâté and Ouma Annie's pumpkin fritters have placed the Middelvlei Braai in a league of its own.

We visited this wine farm today and had their braai for lunch. Included was snoek pâté on pot bread, lamb chop, delicious boerewors and pumpkin fritters ( the best I've ever had). The farm has resident goats, pigs, ducks, tortoises. The resident boerboel and sausage dogs are a lovely addition. R135 was a good price for a great traditional lunch

I wanted to take the family (ranging from 3yrs old to 80+ yrs old) for a lunch that everyone could enjoy plus keep the kids entertained. Despite the rain (the one day in our 5 week holiday) we had a fabulous time, the staff were great, extremely friendly and accommodating.

We sat indoors whilst the chef cooked his famous "braai" which was simply delicious. For R140 pp, we were given lovely fresh rolls with snoek pate and jams as starters, followed by lamb chops, boerewors (sausage) and chicken which was cooked to perfection, along with potatoe salad, green salad and the best pumpkin fritters!! Washed down with their Pinotage wine and coffee brewed on the coals, a brilliant day. Despite the rain, we didn't see the children as they still played outside on the stoep in a tent and then came and dried off in front of the indoor fire.

Lovely unpretentious, working farm, with awesome dogs, farm animals and superb staff. I didn't do the wine tour/tasting, but if I had the time I would definitely go back for that!

Such a refreshing contrast to other wine farms in Stellenbosch.....please don't change and become commercialised like some of the wine estates I've been to!!

Amazing! Why do people visit South Africa and then go to a European Type Restaurant? At Middelvlei you can experience a South African meal together with excellent wines.

Middelvlei wine estate has a real farm feel and not so commercialized. We visited on Sunday during lunch time and discovered that they do a real good old fashioned boere braai. Unfortunately for us they only take reservations so we could only look and not eat. It is a tranquil setting with lots of space for young children to play. A good venue for a family gathering, we will definitely revisit but this time we will make a booking and enjoy the traditional LEKKER BOERE BRAAI!!

I have been travelling to Stellenbosch for over twenty years, mainly to visit my best friend Dr James Jackson, who is probably the best vererinarian in South Africa. On one visit, I called to collect James for lunch, to find Ben Momberg had rung to say his dog had been run over and needed an operation, and so began the wonderful relationship with Middelvlei. James had closed the practice, and his nurse had left, so I had to play nurse to pin the dog's leg, which was a long job, but successful.

The next day we went to Middelvlei to be greeted lwith classic Africaans hospitality, and when they also have a wine estate, this can be quite remarkable!!!

I spent the millennium there, and have visited many times since. They now have braii on Sundays (booking essential) and of course produce wonderful wines, particularly reds. Middelvlei is not the easiest estate to find, but the visit is very worthwhile. Their wine is not currently available in the UK, but they do export by air.

We are planning our next trip. It will include a visit to Middelvlei!!
