As Stellenbosch locals, we were unaware that Vredenheim was home to a Big Cat Park, and we were very impressed when we visited. We were lucky enough to be the only visitors at the time (being a weekday morning during low season) and enjoyed a personal tour with the wonderfully knowledgeable, friendly guide, who really impressed me with his obvious love for the big cats in his care! The Big Cat Park has lions, cheetah, a leopard, and caracal, but what makes it really special are the two tigers. Highly recommended for a visit.

Hudsons: Had lunch here with my wife and friend back in January. Excellent food, good value and service. A real nice garden too with a great view and some great wines.

Vredenheim Estate situated on the outskirts of Stellenbosch hosts a Big Cat Park, wine tasting, restaurant and a stunning location for a picnic.

My husband and I arrived with the intention of just visiting the big cat park, and also stayed for lunch at Hudson's. The gardens with large dam are a wonderful place to wander and admire the stunning floral displays.

The Big Cat Park itself is small, with only a handful of big cats so the entrance fee of R50 per adult is very reasonable. On the day we visited, it was very hot and the cats were lolling about in the shade or in their housing facilities. Not too many photo opportunities!

The restaurant was bustling with people enjoying Sunday lunch while children had a fabulous time outside in the kiddies playing area.

My husband ordered the Hudson's Gourmet Burger which he found a little dry and so had to order additional pepper sauce. I had the classic BLT on a toasted baguette. The bread was absolutely delicious but the bacon was cold and lacked flavour, so I would say a fairly average dish.

On exiting the premises we spotted zebras, ostrich and many other buck species.

It was a wonderful day out, especially if you want the opportunity to see some wild life without paying a fortune and give your kids a chance to run about in the fresh air.

We visited on new year's day and were pleasantly surprised that they were open as everybody else was closed (except Spier next door). The wine tasting and price per bottle is very reasonable. We paid the additional fee to look at the "big cat park" and found it to be okay. I'm glad that these animals are protected and have this space to call their own and are not being poached out there somewhere in the wild but they could have probably had larger enclosures and more room. It was a hot day so the wildlife wasn't moving much except for the tigers that enjoyed entertaining us with their antics in their own swimming pool. We had lunch on the premises and again, the food was very reasonably priced and good value for money.
