“A very nice stay”
Reviewed March 7, 2014

We had a very nice 2 night stay just last week. The hotel is well located for pleasure travelers with nice cafes, restaurants, galleries, and shops on tree lined streets all in walking distance and a good central spot for jumping out to the vineyards nearby. The staff could not have been more helpful and nicer from check in, to sending champagne and chocolates to the room for our anniversary, to arranging a travel breakfast when we had to leave early in the morning, breakfast service, parking our car, etc.
Our room was very comfortable and functional with a large opening picture window for fresh air and nice bath area. I will comment that some of the modern decorating was not to our taste, it was a bit "out there", but I am sure it appeals to others and it certainly would not stop me from returning or recommending this nice place to stay in Stellenbosch.

We all loved this place. I organized a group of 14 people (friends and family) to enjoy the wine region in SA and this was our base hotel.

Located right in the middle of the beautiful town of Stellenbosch it is easy to walk to main attractions. very well located, amazing breakfast included and really comfortable rooms makes a stay there a must. I return there every single time I am in this region.

A beautifully decorated old hotel which has both positives and negatives.
Positives - aesthetically very pretty, centrally located, attentive staff, lovely restaurant
Negatives - no lifts (find someone to carry your luggage), rooms a bit dingy (but clean), old air-conditioning which was very loud.
We enjoyed it, but I think the room you are given could determine how comfortable your stay is

We stayed in this hotel during a recent visit to South Africa. We had possibly the worst room we ever had in any hotel; the shower was dirty, with black mould on the walls, and the toilet was nearer brown than white. It was dingy. We were in one of the rooms in the old part of the hotel, and it looked as if it was due for refurbishment. The rooms in the newer part looked OK, but we were told that all other rooms were fully booked for the whole of our stay. We have had a refund from the travel company to compensate for the awfulness of the rooms. Breakfast was OK, but the courtyard where we had breakfast could have been a good place to eat but looked a bit neglected. Shame.

Room Tip: Don't accept a room in the old part of the hotel unless it has been refurbished!

An historic hotel and its age is one of its handicaps. Bedrooms have aircon but not all of the rest of the hotel. No lift but I am told that one is to be installed next year. Parking is by valet because of the lack of space which can mean that your car is elsewhere in the town. Central location is a mixed blessing. Good restaurant. Staff very friendly and they overcome the other deficiencies.

Despite being in the same stable as the acclaimed Vineyard (Newlands) this hotel was a real disappointment. On arrival I was advised that breakfast is only served from 7.00 - too late to still make morning appointments in Cape Town. I enquired if I could not get just coffee and toast at 6.30, and was told that my only option was to order a meal pack the night before. As to morning coffee, reception stated that "there's coffee in your room, you can make it yourself."
The room itself was an even bigger disappointment. A "Classic" room at a discounted corporate rate of some R 2100.00 was very sparse - bed, work table and stool (no lamp), small cupboard for the kettle and coffee (thought the kettle cord was too short so you have to put it on the floor when boiling it) and another tiny stand for a suitcase. Plug points are industrial surface mount boxes, with no 2-pin sockets for cell phone or iPad charger anywhere near the desk. I mentioned to reception that I was disappointed with the standard of the room, and was told that "that is how the Classic rooms are furnished". No turn-down service is provided by housekeeping.
The bathrooms (like the rooms) are reminiscent of the 1970's. Shower doors are 3-panel sliding style, water pressure in the shower was poor.
Dinner at the Liefde Bistro was fair. The menu choice is appropriate though it does not compare to the Square at the Vineyard. Service was good, food well prepared and well presented. Portion sizes could be a little bigger though - I was still hungry after the meal and I am no glutton.
Check out the following morning was uneventful, although I had asked for my car to be available at 6.30am (valet parking being the only option) but the morning team had no knowledge of the request.
Definitely wouldn't return - there are many other hotels in Stellenbosch and Cape Town itself that are cheaper and offer far better facilities and service. Any Holiday Inn / Protea / City Lodge group hotel would be superior and cheaper.

Room Tip: Avoid Classic rooms - poorly appointed and street facing (some noise)
