We really enjoyed the traditional homes and how the museum showcased different eras in the history of Cape Dutch design. The museum itself could use a renovation, but the staff, for the most part, were informative and helpful.

I visited this museum on a lovely weekend morning. It was nice to be able to leisurely experience some of the history of Stellenbosch told through walk-through period housing. A nice little stroll in a pretty side of Stellenbosch

The Village Museum presently comprises four houses, in their original location, and almost neighbours, so walking around them is easy. The houses date from approximately 1709 to 1850 and show the furnishings and style of the period. A guide in each house, dressed in the appropriate costume of the time, gave a talk on the restoration, suggesting items of interest in various rooms, and about the type of family who lived there. The gardens of each house have been planted with shrubs, trees and herbs that were popular during each period, so it is easy to feel you have been transported to the era. Stellenbosch is a beautiful town, and the Village Museum is worth making part of your tour.

We enjoyed the history of Stellenbosch and this museum told the story pretty well. The women, in costume, who gave the tours were gracious and knowledgeable.

The museums in general in Stellenbosch has a really big potential. The village museum should be one example of doiing something about it. They have a interesting history, too little focus on people that have really suffered and worked under bad conditions.
