“Perfect location”
Reviewed March 25, 2008

We stayed here for 2 nights in February and had a wonderful time. River Manor is perfectly located for a 5 minute walk into the centre of Stellenbosch with a good number of fantastic restaurants and bars. Being able to walk back and forth at night was a nice change from Cape Town and Camps Bay. Our room was small but really nicely decorated in classic style and the whole place felt comfortable. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful and helped us plan our tours of the winelands every morning. highly recommended.

We stayed at River Manor for 2 nights, it has a good location but we found it poorly managed. The staff on reception were friendly but knew very little about the town beyond trying to book you on wineland tours or to their recommended restaurants. Our room was ok but we were disturbed by small animals scratching in the ceiling above our bed and no airconditioning. We said we were unhappy and were offered another room but it was made clear that this was an upgrade and we should be grateful. It would have been good to have an apology for the disturbed night.
The new room was better and had aircon but it looked a little tired. We asked to use the internet to get a seat allocation for our flight home but found after an abortive try that the staff did not know the password, there was a charge and they did not have a printer installed so it was useless for our purposes.
River Manor was our fourth hotel/b and b in South Africa and we would happily return to all the others but would not stay there again.

Stayed at River Manor for 2 nights. They have no restaurant so the hotel is nicely positioned, 10 mins walk into the centre of Stellenbosch where there are plenty of choices to eat.

Our room was nice although quite small. There was a lot of furniture in quite a small room which made it appear even smaller. The bed was made up beautifully with lots of pillows and throws and bath robes and flower petals and even 2 oranges on the top! I thought it all looked beautiful - however as they don't do a turn down service you end up spending time removing all the pillows/throws/robes/petals/oranges so that you can sleep in it!

Breakfast was good and they have a nice garden with 2 small pools and loungers.

The hosts were helpful and welcoming.

I spent about 5 nights at River Manor in January 2008.
During my 4 weeks travelling in the Cape Town, Wineland, Hermanus area, the River Manor was one of the best
accomodations I experienced. I would definitely stay there again
when visiting Stellenbosch the next time.

The location is very central. But since it is just a bit outside of the main city activities, which is about a 2 minutes stroll, the location is in a quiet residential area. So the athmosphere is quiet and relaxed, as you expect it for holidays. Not much traffic in front of the house.
But you are still very quick in the city center.
While walking into town, you are just 1 minute away from some very nice buildings, as the main church and the theological faculty building of the university, which are both stunning.
All restaurants and even medical doctors are in easy walking distance, as well as the very nice botanical garden.

The rooms are nicely appointed, in a colonial style. It has some kind of a "romantic" touch without being over the top. Just right, with a comfortable and homely feeling.
I had a room, which was on a "top" position under the roof. Like a loft, which you had to reach via a staircase on the outside of the building. For me, the room was very nice and the high elevation gave you a nice view over the scenery.
But if you have problems with climbing staircases, you might be better with a different room. In summertime the room under the roof also tends to heat up a bit more.

Besides your own room,
the guesthouse has lots of common rooms, where you can just sit and read a book, hang around with a drink etc. I found this particularly nice, since it really gives you a lot of space to stay in the guesthouse, walk around in the garden and relax in the common rooms, on the beautiful veranda or at the pool.
Without being stucked in your own room all the time.
Particularly the veranda was a place where one could meet other travellers in the evening, having a glass of wine and have a chat for a while. That gave a special social component and memorable evenings.

The breakfast was served in the garden, or inside a very nice
breakfast room. The breakfast was quite good and well above
average.

The hospitality was really superb. From the very beginning you feel that they take good care of you to enjoy your hollidays.
There is professional staff, who take care of all your luggage.
They help you planning your daily activities with good tips where to go. And the tips are indeed good, practical and the owners of the guesthouse really enjoy telling you where to go, what to do etc. They truely care. Also the rest of the staff was very nice, and friendly. While sitting at the pool, they ask you decently if you would like to have a juice or something else to drink etc.

If you want to stay in Stellenbosch town I can highly recomment
River Manor. I also stayed in 2 other B&B in Stellenbosch,
but River Manor was definitely the best. Not only concerning the accomodation itselve but particularly the overall hospitality.

When coming to Stellenbosch: Around the last week of January/first week of February, the new students arrive
at Stellenbosch University. Then, also the parents accompany their children for 1-2 weeks and stay in Stellenbosch as well.
Around that time, it gets really busy and you definitely need a reservation ! I just left again at that time, but experience for 1 night that everything was completely booked out in whole Stellenbosch.

A decent place to stay, our room was small but the adjacent verandah lounge was wonderful. Great breakfast served ouside, a real treat. Adequate pools very welcome after a day out. Easy short walk into town a major advantage. Spa not tried but looke pretty good.

We Stayed at River Manor last March and have to say we stayed at much better places. The room was large and decor to a good standard however I nearly broke my toe due to the poor layout of the shower cubicle in the bathroom, but sevice by the hotel was not great when I mentioned the poor visability of the raised shower tray that caused me to stub my toe and fall over they were not interested. The food was Ok. Although I would hightly recommend the spa. Expensive and better available.

A two night stay in Stellenbosch was just what we needed after five nights on safari - civilisation at last!!!!

We chose River Manor specifically because of it's location - a safe walk into town at night for drinks / dinner and only 25 minutes from Cape Town International Airport.

We stayed in a superior room which was really quite large and located in the old part of the house. The property was very well maintained and looked beautiful in the sunshine. We took advantage of one of the pools to cool off from the rather hot sunshine although did not use the spa.

Breakfast was very reasonable - well cooked but portions rather on the small side. Willem was extremely helpful and gave us plenty of tips on things we should see and do in the area.

It was a very welcoming, friendly place. Not five star but a superb quality B&B in a cracking location. Highly recommended.
