The best part of this hotel is the restaurant! We had a wonderful lunch and breakfast there and it was all sublime! The hotel itself is a historic building so if you like something with a bit of history and character, you will enjoy it. It is not as modern as many other hotels but I quite like that they have kept so many of the original features and didn't spoil it by adding too many new fittings. A touch we quite enjoyed was the room for watching sport, it wasn't a sports bar at all, more a gentleman's club type vibe. The men quite enjoyed chilling in there while watching the rugby! Worth a visit

Room Tip: Book well in advance as they are very popular

Rooms were fine, although nothing special. Get better value for money and nicer roo s in dewaterkant cape town for 30% of the price, stuffy and old needing a revamp of style and overall furnishings. Spa great, dinners lovely, breakfasts unquestionably amazing...but rooms were quite a big let down.

I stayed at the Lanzerac for two nights - the Staff was EXTREMELY friendly and happy to assist - she is a Grand Lady at the age of 300 years - very relaxing atmosphere and the SPA was SIMPLY enjoyable, the healing hands of Megan allowed me to cope with the rest of my stay in comport

Room Tip: Keep your expectations High and I promise you, you will still be surprised - and do take a long walk...

We stayed at Lanzerac in Stellenbosch in April 2012. The hotel is part of the Lanzerac wine estate and is set in mountainous beautiful surroundings. The hotel is like something from 1950s Britain but that doesn’t mean that it is in any way run down or lacks mod-cons. The owners have some how managed to install the modern necessities (in-room safes, mini bars, air conditioning) whilst maintaining the hotel’s charm. The antique furniture in the bar and the beautiful piano in the dining room make this such a romantic venue. When we arrived we took our glass of champagne into the gardens and watched the sunset.

We booked a package at Lanzerac which entitled us to dinner, bed and breakfast plus a free spa treatment each. The quality of our spa treatments was superb and the staff in the spa were so helpful and friendly. Owing to the fact that they had to change the time of our treatments, they even gave us a free treatment!

The hotel restaurant was a beautiful place to eat with excellent service. The breakfasts were exquisite with a wide selection of cereals, meats and exotic fruits as well as hot options available. The quality of the food at dinner was good but certainly not 5*. However Lanzerac went out of their way to accommodate me (I’m a vegetarian) which I really appreciated.

Our room was clean and serviced daily. The lighting in the room added to the romantic vibe. On an evening, delicious chocolates were laid on our pillows. Some people may not appreciate the showers in the bathrooms which are not mixer showers. This makes it hard to set the water temperature. We didn’t really mind this but if you’re expecting the same level of shower you have at home you may be disappointed.

The one negative point about this hotel is the reception. We emailed the hotel twice before we arrived to request an 11am check-in. When we arrived, our request was refused. Despite the fact that we had been travelling for 16 hours, we were left to change our attire in reception and go off exploring for 3 hours until our room was ready. We felt tired and badly in need of a shower. In a 5* hotel, this level of service really isn’t acceptable. It was not peak holiday time and the hotel was not full. I feel that Lanzerac should have been a bit more accommodating.

We took a (complimentary) tour of the wine cellar which was entertaining and informative. We also were given a complimentary wine tasting and our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. I would highly recommend the Lanzerac Pinotage – I still dream of it to this day!

We stayed here as part of our honeymoon. The rooms are basic and not modern, I would expect more from a 5 star hotel. The food is excellent, as is the wine, the Pinotage was so good. There are not enough lounge chairs for the guests so we could not lie out in the sun by the pool. The grounds are beautiful. The staff are friendly overall but don't go out of their way to be helpful. We had 2 customer service issues that were not responded to at all.

It was no surprise to hear that a few days after our visit, we heard, but can't confirm, that the owners had announced the sale of the business, this hotel and another winery a short distance away. It really needs a bit of a push to get it back to where it should be, given the superb situation, the potential quality of the rooms and the wonderful grounds. In particular the reception was willing but extremely slow, the bedroom was good but tatty, the bathroom needed a lot of work - there was even a burnt out plug on one wall, the terrace lacked chairs and was unswept, and the food both in the restaurant and outside, was very mixed in quality and presentation. To offset this we had a very informative wine tour, the quality of their wine was very good, and for the most part the staff were obliging and efficient. As a mid-range hotel you might think it was satisfactory but it is not in the 5star category .... at the moment.

Our rating is average for this class of hotel. We chose the Lanzerac for a 1 night spa break. The venue itself is lovely and old and well maintained. It is old style and the rooms certainly aren't modern, but they are large, neat and comfortable. The spa treatments were very good. The general service was good and very polite but as is often the case in South Africa the attention to detail was lacking. We had a package set menu in the evening which was not great, 2 choices for each course, one of which was decent, the other poor. For this type of venue we expected better choice and quality. We also thought the price of Lanzerac's own wines at the restaurant were excessive as well as others, given they are local to the Cape, even for a hotel of this calibre. Overall glad we visited the Lanzerac for 1 night but happy we didn't make it 2.
